The bats did as much in the movie as they did in the book. Actually more if you count what Legolas did, which I liked. I think within what Jackson is doing they're thr 5th army.

Only if it falls within what was sold by Tolkien years ago. That includes The Hobbit, LOTR, and only parts of the Appendicies. I'd have to double check what parts as I'm not sure. If I understand it all correctly they're out of material to do anything else.

My question is, can they do anything NEW with old characters.

I don't think so. They would want to tie things into what they've done and in order to do that they may have to touch upon things they don't have rights to. Of course they could totally make stuff up but again if it was similar to anything they didn't have rights to it would become an issue. It's why Gandalf in AUJ could only mention there were two Blue Wizards but he had forgotten their names.

Now that I have been "There and Back Again" and looking back at all three movies I would have to say that I didn't mind the love story, Legolas riding animal, Radagast, CG etc. The only thing that bothers me is "Beorn". Right from his introduction in DOS I hated his look. He is described in detail in the book as a big bearded man. This is the image I have had of him all my life. So WTF happened? He has uncontrolled hair all over his face, but still manages time to shave above his lips?? His whole facial look just didn't do it for me. His acting in DOS both TC & EE felt dry and amateur. Maybe some of it has to do with changing colour and enlarging his eyes in post and his acting got lost in translation.

He did nothing in BOTFA so it makes you wonder why even bother having him in DOS. Or should PJ have made him the "Tom Bombadil" of the Hobbit?

If anything his character arch should have followed the same rhythm with Tree Beard form LOTR. Being introduced living his regular life but the events of others forced him to resolve his own.

In the movie Gandalf tells Radagast to rally the animals.....

This is what I hope to see of the Beorn character in the EE

- Radagast asking Beorn. Beorn getting knowledge of "Gundabad" orcs are attacking. The same orcs that inslaved his people. (ENTER motivation and reason to participate)
-helps to rally the eagles
- battles and defeats the ""Gundabad" orcs"
- last scene with Beorn.....undoing the clamp around his wrist. To symbolize he has avenged his people.

DEEP THOUGHT: From bear mode he changes to a man THEN goes into a drawer and places the clamp around his wrist??? What if the clamp was a reminder to Beorn that he chose to wear.

The Beorn look was disappointing but it is what it is. He looks like he was in a struggling 80's metal band.

I would love to see how Azog changed the blade imbedded in his arm. That scene would be wicked!

I thought about that too. Would have been a pretty gruesome switchout. I was surprised that when
Azog stabbed Fili
that not only was there no blood but there wasn't even a sound effect of the blade entering the dwarf's body. Reminded me of when the Joker sliced the one crime boss' cheek off camera in TDK with only music indicating that a violent deed had been done.

Really enjoyed it, cant believe they left out Beorn destroying foes though I'm gutted favourite part of the book...don't get that maybe EE.
