Not all of it but a fair portion was because some expected it to match LOTR in tone. Some of it was also because they wanted to trash the 48 FPS. Those two seemed to carry the largest percentage I complaints I saw most places from folks who didn't like it as much as LOTR or at all.

I think the quality of the film making was every bit as good. :dunno
I was one of those who expected it to be more like LOTR. I still enjoyed it, just not as much as the trilogy. With that said I still didn't think the quality of the film was as good as the trilogy.

I think they relied on CGI too much in The Hobbit. I still say Azog looked like crap, almost like something you would see in a cheap SyFy channel movie versus the way Lurtz or any number of Orcs looked in the trilogy. Same thing with the wargs. The wargs in the trilogy looked like actual creatures whereas I didn't get that from the wargs in The Hobbit. Some of the action scenes reminded me too much of something I would see in a POTC movie.

I still enjoyed the movie and am sure I will enjoy this one. Looking forward to seeing it the first week it's out.

I don't know if all the hate on AUJ was about the tone.

Many argue that the high quality filmaking style from LOTR was cheapened for this series.

Switch from LOTR 24fps/Super 35mm to Digital 48fps plus the increase in cgi characters seems to be the complaint.

For me the shift in tone was expected.

Or am I missing something here. :lol

To be honest the movie is perfect for me (I even liked Azog I didn't think he looked bad)
the movie is perfect until they get to the caves and meet the Great Goblin.. I really don't like that part.

I also loved Gollum, it was great, But the scenes with the Great Goblin and then the dwarfs escaping, plus the bridge falling with them on it....

I tend to kind of skip those parts. Those scenes are the ones that make me look away.

The CGI doesn't look the best here, and the action was too cartoonish.
The whole thing with them escaping and taking hundreds of goblins... it's just too silly.

But then the part with the eagles the movie becomes great again...

I Even LOVED Radagast the Brown, my second favorite character, and that's saying a lot seeing how people were calling him the jar jar binks of Middle Earth.

I love watching the movie but I still hate those Goblin scenes.

I think there are a fair number of people who felt this way. They don't have any or much background with the material. I do understand why they would think this if they didn't know any better.

I don't think they did but that's me. It felt every bit a lived in world as The Lord of the Rings did. I totally disagree on Azog. He looked really awesome. He will look even better as these films go along now that they can really fine tune his look. IMO the Wargs here looked better. Not that the ones in LOTR looked bad but I just think they were better fine tuned in The Hobbit. I didn't get the POTC vibe myself.

I still enjoyed the movie and am sure I will enjoy this one. Looking forward to seeing it the first week it's out.

Sort of less than excited for this one for some reason. I think its because I don't expect much out of the story. The previous film the story was super diluted with just wizbang stuff. Come to think of it felt like PJ's King Kong.

EE tomorrow!!!!!!!!! :rock

Mine's Shipped from Amazon already!!!

Also, if I can chime in on Azog, I thought his CGI looked every bit as real as Gollum. Personally, I think all the LOTR movies have good CGI bits and Shoddy CGI parts.

The main concern is Smaug. It's essential that he looks really good. I thought he looks pretty good in the first trailer, but of course talk backers on other sites are saying it's the worst thing ever.

I always felt the Hobbit movies were going to be hard to live up to LOTR. LOTR trilogy were instant classics, and I'd argue that they are just as popular today if not more so as they were when FoTR first came out.

If you thought the story was diluted you wouldn't like the book. It was every bit as deep as the book and more so. The Hobbit is a simple story.

Final Trailer is out.

Tone is defiantly a lot darker from the looks of it.

The poster is just spectacular. I love the smoke dragon lighting gandalfs pipe. That bilbo and gollum statue is also very nice. I need to find that.

Who hasn't read this book? My point is the story is simple and clear and strong and potent in that simplicity. Adding a bunch of stuff and filing it with too many effects and side stories is diluding it's strength.
