Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Pretty sure dwarves can choose to cut their beards though. This may be what his character has chosen to do as a (possible) rebelious-type character.
Absolutely, and I agree that the "rebellious" trait could be a good explanation. But that still does represent a pretty significant departure (i.e., "artistic license") from Tolkien's writings. In The War of the Jewels (HoME vol XI), he pretty emphatically stated that a dwarf would rather die than cut his beard, and even wrote that no man or elf has ever seen a beardless dwarf.

Do I have any problem with that kind of departure? No, not really. It never really came into the main story anyway. But it would be nice to know there is a story-driven reason behind the change, rather than simply "because we wanted a heartthrob for the new movies".

All the Dwarves were looking great, but this last photo kind of looks like Legolas and Aragorn as Dwarves.

They said they were going to make one of the Dwarves the new heart throb (the Legolas for the Hobbit films ) which I thought was a really bad idea. Too much influence from Peter Jackson's wife and the other female writer for Peter to steer clear of this stupidity.

The black haired dwarf on the right looks like a rip off of Aragorn with the hair and beard, bow and arrow on his back, long coat and even the sword is a plain sword and his whole appearance is hardly dwavish compared to the others. I know they probably wrote several "Hero" scenes for this character which I really hope is not too forced for this minor character with short arms and legs.

Like someone pointed out earlier (and in the 2nd Hobbit Video blog clearly shows) Peter Jackson is packing back the pounds! That's a good sign things are going well!

How do you know that this dwarf wasn't good looking? Besides, does it really matter?

I never read anything about this but would like to. Do you have a link to the story that says they wanted to make a heart throb dwarf and that PJ's wife and woman writer are influencing him to do this?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Actually, all dwarves are born with a full beard, and their race is, by the design of their creator (Aulë) very stocky, even at birth (not sure where the "big gut" idea is coming from).

Clearly, they are taking some artistic license with the character designs in the movies, but we don't know the exact reasons why yet.

I don't remember reading that they are born with a full beard...

I don't consider the HoME to be "cannon" but I do agree with the sentiment that a dwarf takes pride in his beard.

I suppose it would depend on the definition of beard. Both of them have beards, they're just not long. Fili's is just long stubble, but it's still a beard.

I wanna see some dwarf women! Not necessarily in this movie, but I'd just like to see some.

LMAO^^^

i think the pic is cool.
it adds dimension to the characters.the only character that should resemble Gimli in any way is Gloin...other than that,i like the different looks..and we all know they are dwarves.Once the movie comes out it will be spectacular..nuff said.

In The War of the Jewels, chapter 13 "Concerning the Dwarves", in the section "Of the Naugrim and the Edain", fifth paragraph (p. 205 in my copy) (man, that is a lot of direction just to find the reference :D), it reads:
The Naugrim were ever, as they still remain, short and squat in stature; they were deep-breasted, strong in the arm, and stout in the leg, and their beards were long. Indeed this strangeness they have that no Man or Elf has ever seen a beardless Dwarf - unless he were shaven in mockery, and would then be more like to die of shame than of many other hurts that to us would seem more deadly. For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike...

To each their own, but for me any writing attributed to JRRT is canon.

Now, on to more important matters, sorry Tom, but those are clearly not Dwarf women (see above quote). :D

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I found a few others that were not fit for a mod to post.

As did I! :lol

Well, I can find a lot of pics of dwarf women, but not middle earth dwarf women.

I guess they are as elusive as the Treewives.

Fair enough.

HoME are definitely interesting reads, as they get you into the mind of the author and show how a story develops in the subcreator. But I guess I run into problems where JRRT contradicts himself. If you only read, The Silmarillion that doesn't happen.

Nice! And here I thought Aragorn's line to Eowyn about the female Dwarves having beards was an invention of PJ! :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Gimli says something like "Dwarf women are often mistaken for Dwarf men" and Aragorn silently mouths to Eowyn "It's the beards"!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yep, in fact Tolkien said the same thing, that only Dwarves were able to recognize their females from their males. Men and Elves apparently couldn't tell the difference. :D

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Someone posted on youtube, and I haven't checked it out, that on the official Hobbit webpage that there will be dwarf women in the Hobbit and they will have beards.
