Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think Weta will do it to be honest, after what they did last time with LOTR, i'd say they have first dibs. It's Weta's baby after all.

It will be WB decision on who gets it I would assume since they own the licensing rights.

And they went for the guys who had done the LOTR toys before to do The Hobbit toys this time around as they did a great job last time and wanted that continuity. So maybe that's what they'll do again. :dunno

Maybe whoever does the stuff I'm sure it will look great.

Not sure if WETA have the capacity to take it on given the the expected capacity of the range of figures that would have to come out and their admittance to being a smaller company more focused on developing their SFX side of things. The original range for LOTR was released in partnership with SS which helped them to create the range they did, but the production of collectibles is not their main business. Whoever gets the license will be working on Weta creations so it's all good :dunno

No problem. :) Would have posted some of it yesterday but wasn't able to get on.

Bingo! Anyone who has ordered one of the new enviros (awesome pieces btw) on their site can attest to the fact that Weta is not really set up to handle that kind of business. Maybe it's better that another company handles product. That way, the geniuses at Weta can concentrate on creating incredible props and special effects, which I'm sure is what they were all hired to do in the first place.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yes, but they managed to do all that the first time around with LOTR aswell remember. They sculpted the statues as they were making the movies, and actors and crew, even PJ, could look at them and critique them.
I'm sure Weta could handle it. They've done plenty of things on their own - King Kong, Narnia, Dr.Who, Tintin - they used to use Darkhorse but are now confident enough to go it alone, and why not? They don't have to do as many as they did for LOTR, as this is a smaller story - 13 dwarves, Bilbo, GTG, Gollum, Beorn, Radagast, Bard, Thranduil, Smaug, the Goblin King, some goblins, spiders and a new warg, and Elrond, as well as more enviros, would do me!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

That update today was great, I loved seeing John Howe there and the big pile of blended out something in the background. Makes me rekindle the yearning to find out what good ol' Smaug will look like from the movie.

In terms of the license, I don't know. Weta's website has its issues, SS's QC has recently been called into question, plus they are pretty consistently coming in OVER what people are wanting to pay while Weta I think has come in at or under expectations with Bag End, certainly with Rivendell and I think also with the new Orthanc environment. New Gandalf for 70 bucks is also a blast from the past price-wise. So do we want non exclusivity or mixed exclusivity with better price points or do we want the air of collectability with SS's product. Somehow I am giving the edge to SS on human sculpt but this is based on very little data.

I don't think continuity will have anything to do with who gets the various rights to things.

Also the Hobbit seems like a more final license to me, not an ever lasting franchise like LOTR. Will we see revisited maquettes of the Hobbit characters in a decade???

As you say, it may be a limited licence based on the Hobbit story, however there is a bridging story to follow :lecture
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see WETA run with it, but I think they would go down the route of open editions in order to make it pay as collectibles is more of sideline.

The new clip from PJ and co is so cool. Love seeing mssrs Lee and Howe at work. Like an old married couple respectfully poking fun at each other :lol

Are we there yet!! :lecture

The crew was setting up a crane out on the narrow walkway in front of Bag End for their first shot actually in Hobbiton in over 10 years. Because of the narrow and steep path down, the crew had to bring crane parts down and assemble much of it there. It took a little while, but before too long the familiar circular green front door of Bag End cracked open and out stepped an even more familiar face.

Munching on jellied toast, Frodo Baggins sauntered out and hopped down the steps leading to the mailbox, grabbed some mail and headed back inside.

What’s Frodo doing in The Hobbit? I don’t want to spoil too much, but I can say that Frodo is part of the connecting tissue between The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring.

In fact, the next shot was an over the shoulder on Elijah Wood hammering a sign up on Bag End’s front gate: “No Admittance Except On Party Business.” You guys should have an idea where that puts this moment in the timeline.

....
At lunch I caught up with Elijah who was wide-eyed and smiling, obviously enjoying being back in Hobbiton with the furry feet on. He ran off and I said, “Where do you think you’re going?” His reply: “Back to Bag End, my friend!”

I had to run over to wardrobe to get fitted for my cameo the next day, but soon made my way back to set. We had the same scene going and this time they had the camera tight on Frodo. While it was a tighter shot than before, it still captured the landscape behind him. I mean, that’s the whole reason we were out there in the first place, so I wasn’t going to see a whole lot of close-ups and insert shots being filmed. In this case, it was a full on front shot of Frodo, the massive Party Tree behind him.

Seeing the footage of Ian as Old Bilbo was crazy, but nothing compared to seeing Elijah as Frodo in the furry-footed flesh. I’ve gotten to know Elijah pretty well over the last 13 years and it was the very definition of surreal talking to Frodo. Not Elijah. Frodo. I was literally not talking to a friend, but a fictional character, not to mention the magnifier of actually seeing him in Hobbiton.
