There is going to be two films. Both by Hellboy & Pan's Labyrinth helmer, Guillermo Del Toro. It is said that the first film will be most of "the Hobbit" while the 2nd will help tie the events into the trilogy that Jackson did.

I do hope it's James McAvoy. Martin Freeman does admittedly look more like a hobbit (not sure how ), but James McAvoy is, IMO, a better actor, and would be awesome as Bilbo.

Any chance it could be an unknown?

McAvoy could also pass as a younger Bilbo. I have a feeling it will be neither McAboy nor Freeman however.
