Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I do not deny that the title describes that act of the book well, but it just sounds awful as a movie title. It simply doesn't flow well with the other titles, quite possibly for naming a character (Smaug). With all of those creative minds, certainly something more whimsical and "Middle Earth-ish" could've been come up with than, "The Desolation of Smaug." Honestly it sounds rather off-putting, IMO. I just think it's a bad choice.

The title they went with is very Middle-Earthish for the reasons I stated earlier. I'm curious what you would have gone with? This title signifies what the second film is about as have the other titles. This IMO was the obvious choice from the start. Not to mention one of two titles WB registered after the third film announcement.

I can't help but think some of you guys are overthinking these things. :lol

I can see where Agen is coming from. The other two titles are very simplistic in nature, then there's THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG. It doesn't quite fit, but I can't think of anything better.

"Fire and Water"?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Its just a title. Who cares? Why over analyze it? If this is how some of you guys are going to be about a title... a detail which will likely have exactly 5 seconds of screen time... I cringe to think what this place will be like when the movie premiers. :horror

LOTR will become a HT thread. :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I thought about that one but it doesn't work the way the other five movie titles do IMO.

An Unexpected Journey.

There and Back Again.

Then Back Again.

Back There Again.

Been There Done That.

'The Desolation of Smaug' makes sense and fits the film.

I just don't see that...I don't think it's Middle-Earthish at all. Like I said, I don't know what I would rename it, but surely there could be something more simplistic. :dunno

I mean, it's not like I'm not going to see it over the title or anything, but it stood out to me like a sore thumb the instant I read it.

"Fire and Water"?

Exactly! It's like there are these nice, sweet, simple titles and then...FIRE AND BRIMSTONE. The title is just bad.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Then I'd say you don't get the subject matter. :dunno It's very much on point for the subject matter it's scrolled over when GTG looks at the map in fotr and in the teaser trailer, it tells you the importance of the movie, etc. It is very much Middle-Earthish as much as the titles in the other five movies. I guess if you're a casual fan of the subject matter you might not get that but for someone like me who has spent the last 10+ years reading and learning about the subject matter it does. Though there are Tolkien fans I've seen that don't like it either so in the end to each his own so you're not alone. IMO it works perfectly.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Eh, it just doesn't fit well with the other titles, regardless of subject matter.

I think it fits the subject matter, it just doesn't go well with the other two. Like I said though, not sure what would work.

And no Pix, I'm not overthinking it, there just isn't alot to talk about till another trailer comes out. :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I can't say anything I haven't said. Obviously, we have to agree to disagree on this one.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I don't know how much closer to Middle earth you can get than lifting the title directly off of Thror's map? It's kinda central to the whole ding-dang Hobbit movie. Their whole Joie-de-vivre for the entire adventure (so to speak) is to reach that point on the map labeled "desolation of Smaug". :gah: :lol

Exactly. I understand it's appropriate, and I understand the source material. It's just not very fitting, IMO. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. But, agree to disagree.

Pretty much. :lecture

Yet no one can come up with anything better. :slap :lol

The only title I've seen that would have fit just as good is 'The Lonely Mountain'.
