Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm not one of those 3D haters. I like 3D fine. I think it's a cool effect if it's done right.

Prometheus was the most natural. Transformers was the most immersive. It depends.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I am one of those 3D haters because I have yet to see it done well.

On as for "The Hobbit"...2 freakin' days left!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

One thing that surprised me was how much Howard Shore reused music from the original films. I expected a certain amount of that, but not as much as we got. Gandalf gives a monologue and we hear the same music from Sam's speech at the end of Two Towers. Thorin bravely walks into battle and we hear the chant of the Ringwraiths from Fellowship. It worked emotionally but Shore seemed to be taking themes and motifs for established characters and using them in other contexts, and that felt a bit odd at times. Thorin isn't a Ringwraith and he deserves a theme of his own.

I think the most successful music in the film is the dwarves' Misty Mountain song, which is used instrumentally a few times throughout the film--and Shore didn't even write that! Radagast had some distinct music, but much more of the score was recycled than I was expecting. I thought Shore would sow the seeds for music that would be developed into the LOTR trilogy, but instead we get major pieces just cut and pasted verbatim. It still sounds like Middle-Earth, though, and that's good. But I think the amount of existing score that was reused will make his work ineligible for Oscar consideration.

Is anyone following the Colbert week long Hobbit shows?

I saw them last week. :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I can't imagine a clearer, smoother picture. Best and clearest 3D presentation I've experienced. There was no adjustment period for my eyes, no odd fast motion or any of the criticisms I've heard about the high frame rate. For me, this surpassed anything I've ever seen in a theater and it pains me to think this isn't going to catch on and it might be one of the only chances to see an HFR screening like this. It was like looking out a window onto Middle Earth. My buddy said it took him about twenty minutes to get used to it, but for me it was astonishingly beautiful from the very first frame. So many moments left my jaw hanging open because I'd never seen anything so incredible on a movie screen. I won't argue with those who don't like it, but this gets my vote as the best possible way to see a movie. I want to write PJ a letter and thank him for giving me the privilege of seeing what I've just experienced.

Tell him on his Facebook page. He reads it.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I am curious about the 3D and the 48 but I much prefer 2D Middle-earth.

The OS has lots of new stuff and I think it might be easily missed. I'll know tomorrow night but there is old but plenty of new there.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

In Celtic's defense, I use Rotten Tomatoes to gauge a film I'm uncertain or on the fence about, especially if I know so little about it. Now, when it comes to The Hobbit, it's already a no-brainer for me. So, therefore the reviews will be of no help to me. It did help me deciding to watch John Carter, which after watching, allowed me to enjoy it even more, though bittersweet.

So, to bring RottenTomatoes' scores to a movie of this magnitude is a bit like bringing a bottle of chateau to a keg party, where everyone's already set their expectations to having a wild time, albeit with just beer!

And with that, I still plan to watch The Hobbit more than once, and at least in HFR. Glad that Tom's review reaffirms the need to watch it in HFR.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

So far, the only movie that truly blew me away with the 3d was Avatar, and to a much lesser extent, the map sequence in Prometheus -

I am ready for the Hobbit to be added to that very small list of well made 3d (in a movie)

I used to be a huge 3D hater until I got it in the home. It's so much better than the theater.

If you ever get a chance watch resident evil afterlife in 3d. The movie is ok but the 3d is up there as some of the best I have seen.

Have to get active shutter glasses for sure.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Watching Fellowship tonight in anticipation of the Hobbit. Man, I forgot how stupid Elrond was. After Isildur refused to toss the ring into Mount Doom, Elrond seriously needed to toss Isildur into the pit instead of letting him walk away :lol Elrond is too blame for everything and he couldn't even help get rid of the ring later! Bad form dude!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Today I spoke to my friend who saw The Hobbit yesterday, and she admitted she was disappointed. She said the 48fps made a lot of the film look "super fake." She will not see the remaining films in 48fps. She didn't appreciate the obvious use of CG and felt it was used as more of a crutch than in the LOTR films. Though a big Tolkien fan, and someone who has read the book many times, she just felt the film dragged with the added scenes. As of now, she feels this should be a two film series, and not three. She said the best part was the cast. She had no complaints with anyone.

Just remember, there are more people who have admitted to not liking HFR. I seem to be in the minority. If anybody is curious and wants to see for themselves, I recommend giving it a shot. Maybe see it once at 24fps, and if you enjoyed it enough to see it twice, check it out the second time at 48fps.

I think there are some factors I don't quite understand that impact how a person reacts to the presentation, because I didn't need any time to adjust whatsoever, while others need a good 15-30 minutes to get used to it. Some people have compared it to watching a soap opera. I've never watched a soap opera, so I can't comment there, lol.
