Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm such a noob. Before I give my impressions, I saw it last night in IMAX 3D and I'm pretty sure the glasses were a little different than the ones they give you for a normal 3D movie? Did I see it in 24fps or 48fps. I didn't see HFR mentioned anywhere. :duh

**** you Nick Saban!

Frame rate aside, IMAX 3D is always different than standard 3D. If you take standard 3D glasses into an IMAX movie they don't work.

At least that was my experience when we snuck into an IMAX movie a few months ago. :horror

That's because if you watched it in IMAX 3D you saw a film presentation. If you went for the 48 HFR you saw it in the digital reel 3D format. Yes totally different glasses.

That is correct. The "real" IMAX theaters are showing this at 24 fps and any that have chosen to offer it at 48 fps are the "LieMAX" digital screens.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Anyone else go to work today after the midnight showing last night? I'm functioning on a little over 2 hours of sleep. My ass is dragging.

I am there with you, but I am leaving after lunch. Getting ready this morning was hard, but worth it.

I really liked the movie and can not wait to see where the next two will take us.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

My guess is the next two films will be just as long, if not longer. Anyone think the third film will have more tie-ins to LOTR then film 1 and 2 will?

Also, I heard that Jackson will have an extended version of Unexpected Journey. Any idea what they left out or what will be added? I thought the film did a goog job covering the first 6 chapters.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

They filmed a birthday party scene for the Old Took where Gandalf meets Bilbo as a child. Designs for that are in the art book. There was also to have been a scene at the Green Dragon. If they had an additional scene of Saruman eating breakfast, I'd watch that, too. It will be interesting to see how much footage he adds to the first part of the film, which many would say doesn't need to be longer. The extended cut will be about 20-25 minutes longer.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I watched it last night at the midnight showing in 3D HFR. This might arguably be the best 3D movie I've ever seen. Simply incredible and the HFR was great. I got into it right away and it didn't take away from my experience.

The story was also excellent. I enjoyed most the extra story lines and characters that were added but not included in the book. The characters were well represented and each of the Dwarves was unique with their own personality and characteristics that made each of them memorable.

There were also some parts which I felt were not needed along with most of the scenes that were different from the book. I'll do a more thorough review later on when I come back from work.

For now, it's a solid 9/10.

Please note, this movie IS different from the LOTR trilogy in both the tone and overall feel. It's much lighter and less 'epic' just like in the books.

I am starting to think Celtic P et al just don't like new stuff. Grumpy old men far before their time. :monkey2

Thanks. I actually really liked the length of the film. I know some are saying the first hour is slow, but I liked that about all these films. Fellowship was also slow to get going. The way I see it, we only have 2 more films and that is all we will get. These are such amazing and engrossing films, I say give me as much content as possible.

I really like it that it seems Jackson will be bring the Hobbit full circle and tie in directly to the events of LOTR. I can not wait to see how it all comes together.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Disclaimer: I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings books more than I did the Hobbit and I expect the movies will be the same. Although I enjoy all the books/all things Middle Earth. I also enjoy chocolate ice cream more than orange sherbert but they're both awesome. lol

First impressions (I saw it on IMAX 3D)...

- I much prefer the makup and effects used for the Orcs in LotR over the heavy CGI in the Hobbit
- A lot of the action scenes where Disney like and reminded me of Pirates of the Carribean
- A lot of the score was diretly taken from the Lord of the Rings, some is good but would have preferred a little less recycling
- Didn't care much for the Dwarves juggling and hacky sacking of Bilbo's dishes but that's pretty much what happens in the book
- I still find 3D distracting and found myself removing and tyring to clean my glasses often
- I like the way PJ handled the Stone Trolls scene
- The Rivendell scene just seemed uncomfortable to me for some reason that I can't put my finger on at the moment
- The Benny Hill sequence with the Orcs chasing Radagast was a bit much
- I didn't care for Radagast's jackrabbit driven sleigh
- Not sure why people think it dragged but my guess is they're not Tolkien fanboys like myself who want as much Middle Earth as they can get. I didn't think it dragged.
- The scene were there was not much action going on were clear and beatuful but I found the action sequences got kinda blurry and hard to follow in some cases.
- I didn't see the need to use Azog as the main protaganist, they could have used Bolg and kept the continuity with the book. I don't have an issue with how that character was used in the story just the character choice itself.
- Loved seeing the Witch-king in true form at Dol-Guldur
- Was Smaug blue?!?!
- I'm glad there was an opening flashback to what happened at Erebor similar the the battle of the last alliance in LotR
- Saruman's beard was wierd. lol
- Elrond was more cheerful in the Hobbit than he was in Return of the King. lol
- I found myself more emotionally drawn in to the Fellowship of the Rings than an Unexpected Journey. I attribute that to the fact that the main players are all Dwarves, and that's my least favorite Middle Earth race.

In summary, this movie kicked ass and I can't wait to see it again.

PS. Seems silly to have to spoiler tag discussions of the movie now that it's been release. Can we make this thread SPOILER approved or should we just start another one?

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. People with contrary opinions and tastes can live happily and respectfully alongside each other if they choose to do so.

I don't think for a minute that HFR is for everybody. Only 10% of theaters will offer the movie that way, and that might already be a higher percentage than is really needed for something like this. If you have a 3D HDTV at home and are used to watching movies that way, I think this is a big leap forward in clarity and overall experience. If you dislike or are unsure about 3D, this is not going to change your mind, and will probably confirm what you already feel.

Let's keep using spoiler tags for another day or two. Give people a chance to see it.

That's why there should be multiple threads in my opinion, this one stays the way it is for discussions of all things the Hobbit movies without spoilers and a thread for each of the three films with spoilers. Everyone's happy. Or at least two threads, one spoiler enabled and one not.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Now, that I know how fanatastic the story is I am ready to see it in 48fps.

Some spoilers in my review

My review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I'd say that for the most part I am happy to leave everybody to their own opinions, but in your case I was really hoping that you would love it, and I'm glad to hear that you weren't let down after all these years of waiting. Personally, I had let myself get a little skeptical, and so the film really exceeded my expectations. I feel like you have really "kept the faith" when it comes to this film and PJ's return to Middle-earth, and I think your faith in him was rewarded. I am now really looking forward to the next two.

I agree, the movie just came out last night. Give people a chance to see it. I dont personally care, but I mean for people that do care I dont think over night is enough time to give people a chance to say they seen it. People have jobs and families.
