Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I agree. When they arrived at Rivendell and that music plays, I got chills. Some have said that Rivendell looked fake but I thought it looked fantastic. The Radagast chase scene was really fun too.

Were these trolls supposed to be a different race or something? Maybe that's just how it is in the books, but I didn't care for the way they spoke either. I would've preferred it if they spoke in a very primitive 'troll' language using lots of grunts or something and had deeper voices.

..or not talk at all

It was a great movie, I just expected it to be more. Thus, disappointment.

I'm no better, you should see my confusing TDKR score and statements. :slap

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Thought I'd be the last person to say this, but I was very disappointed. Everything felt like a dumbed down, kid-friendly version of LotR imo. Especially Thorin. I kept trying to get pumped up and excited about his character, but then I'd think back to Aragorn and Thorin would become incredibly insignificant. Yes, I'm aware that the book is more light-hearted but I think the movie should have stayed in the same realm as LotR. Seems like the only moments that really caught my interest were when the LotR music would cue, or seeing Frodo/Galadriel/Elrond.

Well, to be fair The Hobbit is a simpler story and a more kid friendly version of Lord of the Rings. Jackson with the additions and some other stuff made it much closer to Lord of The Rings. Thorin isn't as impactful as Aragorn. Aragorn is the rightful King of Men and the man who comes from the Numenoreans who are more magnificent than Dwarves. Probably not a fair comparison just speaking of the characters. I'm sorry you can't say you are aware that its lighter than LOTR and then say you want it to be the same. It doesn't work that way I'm sorry. Jackson with the tone he did set, material he added, and the already placed material made it as close as it can get. Sounds like you wanted this to be Lord of the Rings redo instead of The Hobbit.

There was nothing wrong with the CGI, dunno why people are complaining about that...except the eagles. Very, very fake. That surprised me after Smeagle which I think was the best use of CGI I've ever seen.

What about the eagles? The distant shots where fine but up close OSS were not cgi but prop legs, wings, etc.

Ian McKellen's age is really showing. He just didn't feel like Gandalf to me.

He was every bit as good as he was before IMO.

Favorite scene was probably the game of riddles with Gollum and Bilbo. That was fun. Gollum seemed like an actual creature acting in the film. So life-like.

Great scene. Very ripped from the books. :rock

Trolls aren't suppose to talk.

They do in The Hobbit and these aren't the same breed of Trolls as the one you see in Moria.

:lol

The next flick needs to make up for the over-excessive CGI in this one.

Wishful thinking but I doubt it. We have Mirkwood, the Spiders, a Big Talking Bear, Necromancer And Smaug. Not to mention more with the Orcs and Azog. All of which Im sure will be CGI.

I know, sad it is.

Gonna put in Fellowship. The effects were better 10 years ago. :(

I think they could and should have added a much more serious and 'epic' feel to it like LotR. Just my opinion, I understand the book isn't like that. That's my biggest issue with the film. I never felt the need to rise from my seat in awe, never felt much emotion for any of them or their purpose, etc.

As for Thorin/Aragorn, it's exactly what you said. Thorin wasn't as impactful as him. It didn't have anything to do with Aragorn's higher status and more significant role for me, it's just how they were portrayed. How he was acted and written. I do think you can compare them though as they're both supposed to be the serious, noble leader of each group. They're both royal heirs. They both have the same attitude for the most part. I felt like Thorin was a very uninteresting and boring version of Aragorn. And he wasn't supposed to be.

What about the eagles? The distant shots where fine but up close OSS were not cgi but prop legs, wings, etc.
The only shots of the eagles that I didn't think looked fake were the up close shots of the wings while Bilbo/Gandalf are riding them, and the talons when they dropped off Thorin. Every other shot looked really plasticy and CGI imo. More so than in LotR. I wasn't very impressed with the first shot of Smaug's nostril and the gold falling down his head, but the clear shot of his head looked fine. Those are the only bad CGI shots that caught me off guard. Everything else was great, especially Gollum who was just stunning. I'm still amazed at how life-like they made him look.

He was every bit as good as he was before IMO.
I thought his acting was dull and clumsy compared to LotR to be honest. That might be a bit harsh. I'd have to watch it again.

That explains it.

Yeah, it will all be crappy CGI.

I miss the orcs and prosthetic. They actually had character. Goblin king was a hunk of ****, Azog is like an I Am Legend zombie.

Shouldn't the goblins look like the Moria orcs from the Fellowship of the Ring? Legolas refers to them as Goblins and they're all from the Misty Mountains.

Then how did the orcs walk in sunlight during the Hobbit? I thought only Uruk Hai and a few special orcs could do that?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

The only reason I liked this one, was because it was funny, and didn't take itself seriously. Tis a good thing. Separate the tone.

I quite liked that bit with Bofur and Bombur with the sausage at Rivendell.

I knew Bombur would be exploited. Just surprised he didn't have any lines. A lot of the dwarves didn't save for the main 3 or 4.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I thought the CGI looked decent but was overused. Imagine how badass Azog would look without the added CGI. That's what made them intimidating in LotR. Lurtz was actually frightening.

You literally say this about every movie. :lol

Bombur will be very prominent in movie 2. But yeah, the mains seem to be Thorin (obviously), Kili, Balin, Dwalin, and Bofur.

Yeah, all those orcs and uruks were great, not just Lurtz.

This is literally better than any creature I've seen so far in the Hobbit,

I hope Bolg isn't changed. He looks quite good.
