Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm going to see it this week, for those who have seen it, does it make sense for Jackson to split it into two parts? :dunno

Your honest thoughts.

Absolutely. It's actually being split into three movies and people are chiding it for that fact when the LOTR films each required one movie apiece but the fact is that Tolkien glossed over some *huge* events that took place with just a sentence or two in several instances, events that could easily be the basis for an entire film.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Your honest thoughts. Josh I'm interested in your opinion of it being split into parts.

When I first heard the news at Comic-Con I wasn't totally sold. After seeing it twice already and more to come I'm ok with it being a Trilogy. The additional parts coming from the appendices and depth being added to a simple story line give plenty of meat on the bone for this set of films. I was ready after both times seeing it to set their longer and see the entire story.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I actually didn't mind Radagast save for the "Indy on the raft" TOD-esque compositing for some of his sledding close-ups. He reminded me of the dude who rode the snail and guy who flew with the giant bat in The Never Ending Story. Silly but cool in a fairy tale kind of way.

Thanks. Do you know if Jackson gave all three parts different titles or are they just calling it parts 2 and 3.

No problem Part 2 is called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and part three is now The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

Wow Part 2 should be fantastic to watch just by the title! And Part 3 will be the icing on the cake. :clap

Much like the whole LOTR trilogy by Jackson was!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm glad Jackson is extending the Dwarve Elf war, to carry into the next two films.

How many years are they planning to release the next two parts.

Do you see part 1 getting an Oscar next year?

Adding Thranduril aspect at the beginning of the movie was a nice nod and any bits to come will be interesting. It will also help make how Gimli and Legolas come together more powerful.

Part 2 comes out next December, Part 3 right now is Summer of 2014 as of right now.

I think it will get stuff for visual effects, makeup, clothing. Nothing major though.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Wow! This thread sure got away from me after being gone all day. Not gonna read it all, I'm lazy. :lol

Anyway, went today for the 2D viewing and I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I didn't mind the things I did before and this time it went even faster.

I suggest that those who saw it in 48fps and didn't care for it to watch it again in regular 2D. You're not as distracted and you can simply watch the movie.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Just saw it today and I thought it was solid.

I loved the LOTR movies, but went into this one trying not to compare it to LOTR. They are vastly different books written by Tolkein at different times in his life - they're bound to have a different look and feel. The same is very true for PJ - he made LOTR over ten years ago, how could the Hobbit ever be the same as that?

About the only thing I didn't like was the CG - there was too much of it. Azog would have been much better had he been done like Lurtz. The expressions were flat or looked too fake, the skin tone (granted he is the Pale Orc) just came out wrong in CG and looked washed-out. I would have been much happier if Azog was designed like Bolg. My other gripe would be the lack of dialog with the other Dwarves. Now granted it's not like each Dwarf got a whole chapter to themselves in the book or anything and there's still two more movies yet to come, but I do want to see more out of the supporting Dwarf cast before the Battle of Five Armies where a good number of them die.

Things I did like was Radagast. Not only is it great seeing a Doctor in the Hobbit franchise, but I think he pulled if off really well being quirky and likeable. I'll also add in the Troll scene - I thought it was really well done. Being a favorite scene from the book, I was worried it wouldn't caome across well on screen, but it was comical and just dangerous enough. The second big scene for me was the game of riddles - that was spot-on perfect. As someone who has read that scene in the Hobbit book more times than I can count, I can't tell you just how amazing it was to see on screen. Freeman was perfect, Serkis is masterful at Gollum (and CG acting in general), so the two of them together nailed it. Sure, it wasn't super-charged dramatic scene that made everyone in the theater cry, but it was great for those that know it.

I plan on seeing the Hobbit many more times over the holidays and I can't wait for the next two. Even though this movie was pretty long, I really didn't want it to be over and could spend hours more time in Middle Earth.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about the "Hobbit"/Dwarf/Misty Mountain theme that's played throughout the film.

It's one of my favorite pieces, an instant classic. I can't get it out of my head.

It really is, I get chills every time i hear a rendition of it.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, I love it. I've already listened to my OS 10 times. The score for this movie is really good and blends the old/new really well. I know the old stuff maybe stands out a bit more but that I think is due to so many years of us hearing it.

I've been playing Song of the Misty Mountain to death for the past month! :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

The only re-use I didn't like was the Nazgul theme because of where it was used.
