Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

^ And bring some Ritalin because the first 45 minutes wasn't slow at all.

Not everything has to be non-stop action.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think there is a chance he may be tied to the Necromancer and that's why the music played.

They played the same theme when Frodo claimed the ring as his own, so I think maybe calling it the "avarice theme" might be more accurate. :dunno

I have no theory of my own to be honest. I believe either option is totally possible.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I am "fortunate" enough to live about 10 mins away from the only theatre in Nevada equipped to show the 48 fps version; and well I felt like I just had to see it that way ... I actually didn't care for it, at all.

I have been REALLY looking forward to the film and even though I don't post much here anymore and my collecting days are largely behind me, I am still very much a Ringer at heart. That said, I LOVED the film; but didn't care for the new technology. It really looked like it was on 1.5 speed the whole time, it was jarring and actually took me out of the film experience on many occasions, noteably any of the faster/action scenes. The more glaring example was probably the sled chase with Radagast. Incidentally, Radagast was the one element of the film I really didn't care much for either; way too corny, a light-hearted film notwithstanding. Minor nits aside from that really. The magic wasn't what FOTR was for me, "Concerning Hobbits" can largely be considered the greatest film opening in my experience; talk about being thrown into a world! I want to see this again in 3D at 24 fps and see if it makes a difference in the experience, I suspect it will; sorry PJ, you didn't convince me that 48 fps will catch on one day.

Where have you been!? :wave

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

There was more than that in the first 45 minutes!

I say both you and CP need to go see it again. :D

I have a better idea. Why don't you explain to us what happened beyond what I described.

I didn't say it has to be non-stop action either. Why is everything so black and white with you? I am saying it was slow and didn't accomplish anything more than spending 15 minutes on it would have done.

For one thing, I didn't keep an eye on my watch, but didn't they explain what happened to the Dwarf Kingdom during that 45 minutes?

I really doubt that whole Shire sequence would play well with 30 minutes chopped out of it.

But anyway, I was just teasin' you guys. CP probably knows that.

It wasn't slow though. Don't forget that the journey doesn't end with this movie. We still have two more films. Fifteen minutes is not enough time to introduce us to Bilbo and all twelve dwarves (as they arrive separately), and see their antics and the entire dinner sequence before Thorin arrives. Then there's the story of Smaug burning Erebor, and Thorin's quest to retake his home. Then Bilbo learns why they've come to him, etc, etc. Not to mention the old Bilbo and Frodo scene. None of that dragged, it's all part of the story.

If all of that had been done in only fifteen minutes it would have seemed ridiculously rushed. By the end of the trilogy you would have wished they spent more time fleshing out the introduction and recruitment of Bilbo at the Shire because it's a kind of key part of the story.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Most of the banter beyond the dwarfs in the shire could have been cut out. etc.

It needed to speed up to Thorin's arrival. It took to long.

What? You didn't like their singing?

"THAT'S WHAT BILBO BAGGINS' HATES!"

XD

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Agreed.

And cut that Radagast sillyness, as well as the draggggg Goblin fight.

I would have enjoyed the Radagast parts if it were played more seriously. He's pretty close to the JarJar of Middle earth.

Singing was awesome. The nonstop 'WERE DWARFS" wasn't.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

But the banter between the dwarfs is some of the little bit of time you get to know them! Otherwise they are complete ciphers. And I'd be sad to have lost the plate silliness. It's a pretty fun part of the book!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Btw one question.

A couple of times in the film the expression 'What on Earth is ____ ?' is used.

Shouldn't they be saying 'What on MIDDLE Earth?' Am I missing something?

No, you get plenty of other scenes that build the characters up.

I'm not saying cut it all out, I'm saying cut the padding out.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Ween, I know you pretty well. Don't worry. :D

You can introduce everything you need to know about Bilbo in 5 minutes. He's prissy, he keeps to himself, he enjoys a quiet lifestyle, and he don't like no body at his damn house!

I know who Gandalf is. And I think they did a pretty mediocre job at introducing the dwarves. The trailer did it better. Some stood out, but I can't remember for the life of me what their names were. Aside from Thorin. Because when we were introduced to him a second time, they held the camera on him, and made it clear that this character is important.

Aside from the ear hat dude, none of them really stood out. I had a hard time keeping track. But that could've been the 48ps, which made everyone move like they were on crack

And you act like I should care about all those story points. I don't. The only thing that is important to me is that Bilbo goes on this adventure, and goes through personal changes, and becomes a great hero.

Goobdlity gloopta and chiawhanka tarki whatever fighting the battle of wawanka doesn't do a single thing for me. Now, if it all melds into the narrative of the main plot, i'm OK with that. But none of those council scenes were needed. And they went on for way too long. We get it. Sauron is coming back. It's in the next series. Come back to Hobbit town. But I did love the Throin revenge thing. Good stuff there. Love revenge tales.

The best stuff in the movie is once they get in that cave. From then on, it's pretty damn brilliant. It was OK before, but once it hit that point, it just took off. They kept the plot at that point simple, and too the point, they had the characters develop in that area, and had some moments of pretty good tension.

That last hour? Half hour? Is worth seeing. It's great stuff.

What on Middle Earth sounds too.... caricaturish... like something from an SNL sketch.
