Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I wouldn't call Keith a hater. He likes the movie and outside of the whole 1, 2, or 3 doesn't seem to have much of an issue.

Just tired of this discussion. I think we've all explained the reasoning rather well.

That surprised me as well.

I'm actually looking forward to the other two as well. :rock

That surprised me as well.
It didn't receive a BAFTA nomination so I was expecting it. I think the main reasons for no nomination are,
  • Tough competition
  • The same 15 costumes throughout with few background extras
  • Not a lot of scenes allowing viewers to admire the dwarven costumes
The Desolation of Smaug will have more of a chance because there'll be more costumes.

That's true. At least we're talking about it. :lol

Probably true on all of that. Hopefully movie two and three garner The Hobbit some more nods and wins.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Not sure why the word "hater" is being used around here because some people who enjoyed this first movie have concerns about this being stretched into three films. I was ok with two films because that's how the story was written. That's how the story was shot. But suddenly Jackson decides he's not done and can have enough to fill a third movie and gets people to continue filming new scenes even after filming had finished. That is a very concerning thing in my mind to happen.

I give this film a solid 8/10. The reason I'm so concerned about how many there are is if it's packed with too much stuff, it can bog it down and mess up the pace. It may be a chore of general audiences to watch and therefore render all of them useless. These aren't self-contained stories. It's one narrative. They all must be good for any of them to be worth watching.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I thought it would get score and cinematography. I was hoping with 10 films in BP it would get one of the 10 and at least be nominated. Ah well.

I don't hate the film but I don't love it either. As a fan of movies in general and not being biased about any, I say it was the right choice to leave The Hobbit out of BP category. Doesn't belong there at all.

Finally got all my little dwarves together:

Nice! I still gotta get that set and manage to get the Dwarves I don't have.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

The funny part is that you think I'm a hater. :lol

Interesting that you would think that because I wasn't referring to you at all. I didn't post anyone's name because I don't know who's a hater and who's not. I leave that up to the individual.

I gotta disagree a little. A single Game of Thrones book is over 1000 pages. The Hobbit is what just over 300? ..

This is pretty much how I would have responded so I'll just quote.

...The appendices have been added in. It's not just the "300 pages" or so of the Hobbit...

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Damn Peter Jackson being cheap. Could have made 6 movies if he included more things from the The History of Middle Earth and Unfinished Tales. Way to be thrifty about such a great license. I mean, LotR should have been at least 12 movies.

Yup and each would have made a billion!...LOL

It should've gotten nominated for best song. I think it couldn't be nominated for best score because of some of it being used in the LotR. It has to be all original.

That Ted song gets a nom but not Finn's Lonely Mountain? :monkey4

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I believe they changed that rule or that's what a couple of different places.

I didn't see Silver Linings Playbook but what makes it so special to be nominated?

And I only count 9 pictures nominated on Oscars.com. Was there 10?

The Hobbit wasn't nominated because there's no way they'll give it an Oscar for the first part of a movie. They didn't with LotR either.

As for belonging there, there are alot of movies that belong there that get overlooked. The list this year is pretty blah and typical.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Buddy at my work said, "saw the hobbit, pretty good, just didn't like the 1st 45 min though, those dwarves singing eating and singing man, what was that all about?" I'm like "yeah man, that's in the book though" He's like "meh".

Point is i really think there's a difference in those that read and enjoy the book, then just casual fans that don't really understand the source material and wonder why some trolls talk in this one and not in the previous movies etc.

I said that i really liked the first 45 min cause it was pretty true to the book, and it set up how well of a prissy Bilbo is at the beginning etc. He's like "yeah i suppose".

I really enjoyed this movie, and my only problems were i was kinda let down by the goblin king. Not scary or a sense of danger at all for me.(don't really think he was supposed to be though)

Orcs > Goblins

My big things are i really liked the little life lessons you get watching it (if you pay attn)

Not so sure about that... I went with a guy who has read the book twice and he said there was a nice 110 minute movie hidden within the 160 minute movie. I, on the other hand being someone who has never read the book nor has a desire to, after one viewing said I thought it was great and am curious to see what the EE has in store for us.

And just a question then since it was brought up (and sorry if it was answered), why do some trolls talk and others don't?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

As far as if the book has any impact on how you look at it. I think it has some impact but probably more so the more you've read it. I kind of expect someone who has read it 1-2 times to have similar thoughts if the book didn't totally capture them. As I've said before I know people who've read The Lord of the Rings numerous times but don't care for The Hobbit nearly as much. It's the difference in tone, style, and substance between the two that's the root cause.

There are different breeds of Trolls. I don't think Tolkien ever wrote exactly why.

I believe that the trolls that are basically slaves/warriors/work horses are those that just dont talk and are not supposed to...they are meant to and are trained for business only...Bert,Tom and Billy basically have no master and are just chillin out for the last few thousand years...probrably escaped from Morgoths Army after the fall of Gondolin or the final battle with the Valars forces with leftover treasures from Gondolin and now talk up a storm like 3 good buddies do...Pals and mates for life...JMHO of course but it's how I interpreted it from both the books and films....Trolls were meant originally to be dumb but powerful servants/slaves when first created by Morgoth
