Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Just saw this, I thought they would show how Gollum became the way he is. Wasn't he a normal looking dude in the flashbacks in LOTR?
Return of the King already explained how he became the way he is.

Also Bilbo seems fine for wearing the ring for so long but Frodo goes a little bat**** looking afterwards?
There is no eye of Sauron so the "weight" of the ring is "less heavy".

Are the sequels going to mention the origin of the ring?
The Fellowship of the Ring prologue briefly explains it. Will they go into detail on how Sauron tricked everybody? No, but I'm sure the second/third film will further explore Sauron's ambition and movements.

So... buy both versions, open Walmart edition and enjoy and leave target version secure and on display.

Got it. :panic:

Double dip or bust. :lecture :exactly:

Besides, two of the three previous EE's (FOTR and TTT) were inferior to the theatrical editions anyway.

Well...that's just crazy talk. Meaningless gibberish that is followed through the lips by drool.

I agree with the first part.

Totally dead wrong on the second. :lecture

I agree with tyhe second part...of THIS post.

Its all mindless entertainment to Josh so of course more is better. Those of us who value pacing and content have different opinions. :D

You can't sugar coat it. Wrong is wrong.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I'm reading this book by a fellow TORn staffer called The Lord of the Films. It's a great book giving cool inside details on the filming of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Lots of details I knew and lots that I didn't but all gathered together. I got it on Saturday and am close to finished with it. If you enjoyed the these movies and the world as I am I highly suggest getting it if you don't already own it.

His site has a collectors edition with some nice goodies.

Well considering that the LOTR films (including The Hobbit) are my favorite film series of all time I'd absolutely love to believe that longer editions inherently mean better movies. Unfortunately no amount of virtual high fiving will change the fact that some of the best theatrical scenes are undermined by additions in the EE's.

There's some good added to FOTR and TTT (and even great with regard to TTT's extra Boromir flashback) but the lagging additional time and awkwardness of too many of the additions make for an inferior narrative. Sorry.

While I respect the fact you prefer the TE a bit more as a whole. I can't blame you for feeling the way you do. I think in my experience being a fan of Middle-earth thinking the TE are better films is in the minority. Doesn't means its wrong just different.

Now, as a fan of Middle-earth and it being something I've put a ton of time in the last 12 years what was added in the EE do make for a better narrative. Many of the additional scenes make a more complete and better telling of the world Tolkien created, and I think Jackson being able to add to each film making them better is amazing.

So in the end I think the TE are amazing and are the readers digest version of the movieverse. Then there is the EE which are meant more for fans who have invested a lot in being fans of Middle-earth. So for casual fans I'm sure the TE are better but it's my belief that all the things that make the TE amazing are made better.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I absolutely find the ROTK EE superior than the TE. Cutting out a satisfying defeat of one of the trilogy's primary villains was just crazy. Gothmog was built up too much in the beginning of the film to just ignore as well.

For whatever it's worth I do wonder if I'll love the Hobbit EE more just because I'm so enamored with being able to return to Middle-Earth as well.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Cutting out the Saruman part was a mistake. It adds a lot on its own so I'm glad we got that.

The Hobbit EE should be fun. There are some scenes that were left out that will add to Bilbo's journey.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Anyone know what scenes will be added into the EE?
It has been awhile but were the EE LOTR trilogy released after ROTK left theatres?
Thye never released FOTR EE before the TT theatrical release did they?

Some of the scenes I've heard is a party when Bilbo was a child that helps tie in the good morning conversation, some back and forth between Bilbo and Elrond, Bilob seeing The Shards of Nasril. Those are the ones I've heard about.

Each one of the EE came out before the next film or in the case of the ROTK came out a year after its theatrical run.
