Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Good! I hope people who maybe left the theatre a little disappointed like it more this time. I do think for people knowing this isn't The Lord of the Rings redux might enjoy it more.

Glad I bought the Target version with the Bilbo Lego. It has my favorite cover of Gandolf and Bilbo. Yes, I will be buying the EE also, but I couldn't wait to watch this again. I am weak.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Well bought it today and watched for the first time. Overall pretty good, nice to see some familiar faces.

The things l hated about it was the CGI characters. The goblins and trolls where pretty much all CGI and looked way to polished and fake. Example the Ork missing his hand, he looked like complete crap. Looked like a plastic character do to the full CGI. Why the hell didn't they put an actor in prosthetics like Lurtz in FOTR for example? Also didn't like the design for any of the orcs or goblins. The designs for the LOTR where a million times better.

Many parts felt too childish (geared towards kids more then LOTR was). Example the trolls with the horses scene, and the goblin king scene, even the fighting scenes towards the end had comedic elements in it l didn't like.

Also didn't have much drama in it really. LOTR had much more of a serious tone to it.

Overall pretty good just standing on its own. Hope they get a little better though.

EDIT. Also have the ultra violet digital codes for $5.50 if anyone wants them.

The reason it felt more childlike is because The Hobbit is more childlike than The Lord of the Rings. He did thy in the spirit of the book which is what he should do, and it's one of the reason appendices material was added. It helps tie the two together and give the films more a feel similar to The Lord of the Rings.

The thing I loved the most about the movie was the beginning (showing the story of how the dragon got there and took over the gold)

but there were some things I did not like as well. I did not really like the troll scene that much either. I didn't like the scene where Bilbo meets the dwarfs as much as I thought I would. I knew the scene from the trailers but didn't love it when I saw it.

I didn't have problem with the CGI creatures though, they looked fine to me. I heard really negative comments about it before (looking really bad) but I thought they looked okay. I expected something a lot worst.

some of them did look a little fake, but for the most part they didn't look as bad as I thought they would.

I liked it in theaters when I saw it for the first time. the only part I dint like was the long scene playing the game with golum.

other then that the movie is totally epic.

Watched this up until the scene where they leave Rivendell last night. MY GOSH does it look amazing on blu. Absolutely the best picture and most vibrant colors I've seen on disc. Better even than Avatar and TDKR.

Told you it looked good. :lecture

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Purchased the Steelbook yesterday. Watched up to the crew arriving in Rivendell , then started to knock out (around 11pm).
Watching for the second time (first in theatres). Did not mind Radagast as his character appears to introduce the brewing of "Darkness" into the story.
Do agree with others about the CGI. Feels soft, light and fake. Perhaps it is the choice of "Flesh" colours used (ie. Trolls , Goblins and the Pale Goblin Boss Guy) compared to LOTR and a darker tone (Cave Troll)
Have to admit the "English Accents" of the creatures seems to be the go to voice. Would be nice to try something different.

I am very happy that THE HOBBIT is in my home collection!!! :clap

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I picked it up yesterday but I haven't watched it yet. Looking forward to finally seeing it in non-3D! :rock

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Finally watched the rest of this on blu-ray. Third time seeing it overall and the first in 2D. I loved every minute of it. My absolute favorite film since...well, The Lord of the Rings. Unbelievable that lightning struck twice, or four times depending on how you want to look at it.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I was disappointed with the film the first time I saw it, but still really enjoyed it. But now after seeing it again, to be honest, It's not holding up for me. I don't know exactly what it is. At first I thought it was the light-hearted tone but now I'm not sure.

I get the feeling that the movie doesn't know exactly what it's trying to be. It doesn't feel "complete". The style is just..all over the place if that makes sense. Idunno :lol

I'm looking forward to seeing Smaug's full-body design though. I've always been fascinated with dragons and it seems that they're going with that "classic" dragon look for Smaug so that's exciting. Anxious to hear Cumberbatch voice him as well. Perfect choice IMO.

Also, I don't see how they can make Gollum look like an actual living being whereas Azog, the eagles, worgs and trolls are so obviously CGI. Not necessarily bad CGI, but just clearly CGI. I wish they would have stuck to the makeup/suit Azog design.

I liked it in theaters when I saw it for the first time. the only part I dint like was the long scene playing the game with golum.

You didn't like the best part of the movie.... :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I watched it for the first time last night and I definitely liked it. The part I liked best was the Bilbo and smeagol riddles in the dark scene so maybe I was was just longing for a lotr fix.

Love how much effort Mr. Jackson puts into these. If there is anything I didn't like about the movie its because of the material he had to work with not anything he did. I guess I miss the interaction between humans dwarfs and elfs. Not such a huge dwarf fan I guess which makes it difficult for me to get behind/ have interest in their plight. Argorn was a much better protagonist IMO.

Also I fear I may have seen the last of gollum for a while (forever) and that just sucks!!!

Yeah, it's pretty awesome that fans of Middle-earth have been treated to four fantastic films. :yess:
