Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Even more devasted Del Toro isn't directing now. That would have been EPIC

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Thats gonna be the hardest part of The Hobbit. Where to cut it.

How do you cut it with Smaug being shot down though? I mean so its smooth into part 2 with the battle of the five armies. Cause if I remember correctly its all going on at the same time.

I really need to sit down and re-read The Hobbit again.

There's actually quite a span of time between the two.

I can see them playing up Thorin's greed and unreasonableness as he is unwilling to share the spoils. This is what leads to the start of the battle. Then the Orcs and Wargs come. Thats when Gandalf tells the Elves and Dwarves to fight together. I think the battle will be very moving (I'm getting goose bumps right now thinking about it). I can't wait to see Thorin shouting: "To me! To me!" GOOSEBUMPS! :rock

And then the repenting of Thorin... man it's gonna be so awesome.

There would obviously be less material in the second movie from the books in this scenario, but I think thats where they could put the stuff in to tie together with the LOTR. They could have the White Council driving Sauron out of Mirkwood. I'm sure that will be in there somewhere.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Like I said in the book I could have sworn it was pretty close to one another but its been probably 2-3 years since I read it honestly. So my memory is pretty fuzzy. :lol

The battle will be epic I have no doubts about that.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

IMO Del Toro has a better understanding of this type of genre and his creativity and imagination is unrivalled. Saying that, with Jackson back, continuity wise - visually, and in terms of tone, it'll go hand in hand with the trilogy.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, I'm all for it for the sake of continuity. :)

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Del Toro is solid director. I was glad to have him on board but he can't hold a candle to Jackson IMO. Which is why I'm quite ok with it being Jackson instead. He knows this genre just as good and especially this series.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I was excited for del Toro as a perfect substitute, but Jackson is the ONE I want to direct these films. It's not just the continuity of the visuals, it's also the fact that he also helped write the screenplay! It's the same dynamic as we had for LotR.

Honestly, I'd have been fine if these movies never got made, but if they are to be, these are the circumstances under which I'd want it to happen.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

sounds great at last!!Loved the movies-they had an emotional pull to them quite like no other fantasy film-the only difference now will be the added pressure and far MORE expectations on these 2 films than the previous 3-not withstanding fans of the books, but now fans of the movies who havent read the books.
I cannot wait to read the castings...and also to see Howard Shore return to Middle Earth.
Ahhh-i still remember the day i seen the first trailer to Fellowship of the Ring....this feels like that day to me.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

...And (I'll say it again) I hope Chirstopher Lee is healthy enough to get on board! It'll add so much to the story seeing his fall from grace

I have much less desire for book accuracy for this than I did for LOTR.

I know that they will follow the basic story, but there will be many changes and I'll be okay with that. If they put the book on screen it would have the feel of a kids movie.

How do you all feel about the talking animals in the Hobbit? Do they belong in the movie?

Even more so, what about Beorn's animals? Do we really want to see animals setting the table for dinner? It's a bit to "disney" in my opinion.

I agree. It's gonna be awesome seeing him lead the White Council against Sauron (The Necromancer).

It will take a lot of artistic license to show his "fall from grace", but it has the potential to be very cool.

Totally hope this happens. Lee was brilliant in LOTR.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Who knows where these films are heading creatively? I think the big question is what's the cut off point for the end of the first one. It'll be intresting to see how that develops. I'd also imagine any bridging point between these two and the trilogy will happen as a footnote at the end of the the 2nd film. Maybe just a blink and miss Aragorn appearance as it explains that he then goes on to watch over Hobbiton. Kinda like old Ben looking over Luke...

I don't mind them ending it on a cliffhanger since the films will only be a year apart. Gives us something to look forward to. Plus it might help more book sales (go literacy! :yess:) with impatient people filling the gap by reading it.

If he's in it, they'll have to shoot his scenes greenscreen in England which, if PJ's smart, he'll make a priority and then just use a stand-in for the long shots, etc.

Yeah I hear ya. I think he said about two years ago that he considered it too much for him physically to jet across the world to film. Defo agree that green screen back in England will be the only way we'll see Saruman as we remember him in the film. :lecture

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

MGM needs to shell out and get Lee one of these.....
