Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, folks NEED to read the story. Having them together will work great. Reading the books and having the films has increased things for me 100 fold.

I finally read the Hobbit about 8 months ago. I'm really looking forward to these movies even more now.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Rumors of Michael Fassbender landing a role in this are great. Check out Hunger if you haven't seen it yet. Amazing performance.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

The natural divide is when the Dwarfs have been captured by the elves and taken to their cave and Bilbo is left on the outside, invisible, trying to figure out a way in.

Yeah, thats probably the best spot. I don't think you want to leave the movie hanging like funny like with something crazy for a year.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think ending the first movie with the death of Smaug is a bad idea, because that's most of the story done. What you'll have in the next one is alot of padding, alot of dwarves walking around an empty mountain waiting for the fight.
Maybe they won't even do a cliffhanger. Everyone thought Harry Potter 7 part 1 would end on a cliffhanger but it ends on a resolve, to give it a more self-contained story and give the movie some sort of structure. That could be the same for The Hobbit - maybe it ends after Bilbo saves them from the Elvenkings home.

Or maybe when Gandalf leaves them on the edge of Mirkwood. That's not strictly a cliffhanger either, more of a 'There's more to come!' like the end of FOTR and TTT had. I'm guessing Gandalf has already been in some White Council scenes and he gets a bird from Radagast saying Sauron is on the move in southern Mirkwood so leaves Bilbo and the dwarves (dwarfs?). So maybe that's part cliff-hanger as to what Gandalf's upto, and part The-Adventure-Continues. I think i'm gonna put my money on that! Save the reveal of Smaug for as long as possible!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Heh, we don't even have the extended LOTR on bluray.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I hope some day! :panic:

I have a feeling the LOTR EE bluray release will be used as marketing for the Hobbit.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Extended blu ray? Nah . . .I'm already anticipating that I need to justify a 3D TV because this will be in 3D Blu Ray.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

If you mean the bluray theatrical editions, I will never buy those abominations.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

ROTK extended is the only way to watch that one, but FOTR theatrical was a better film than the extended version. The latter was way too choppy.

:goodpost:

To be honest the few times I caught LOTR on Spike in HD I wasn't too impressed. I didn't like the way colors looked. Especially the part here Froduo, Sam, and Gollum are climbing the Stairs of Cirith Ungol.

You forgot TTT.

I will never watch them rape Faramir again in the theatrical edition. They only just barely pulled his character out of the gutter for the extended edition.

I do remember being the most happy with FOTR in theaters, but I don't remember having a problem with the extended edition.

The EE of ROTK indeed was much better. Especially for the Mouth of Sauron and The Houses of Healing (esp, the latter... I don't like that Aragorn killed the mouth of Sauron... not very Kingly behavior during a parley... and not in the book... but I digress.)

I do wish they wouldn't have extended the paths of the dead though. The scull avalanche is the worst scene in the trilogy bar none. Actually the whole Paths of the Dead sequence was lame IMO. The EE was just worse.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I forgot about the Path of the Dead. You're right (Mouth or Sauron beheading was great, though). FOTR wasn't bad, it jus felt like a lot of it was crammed in there. TTT had a lot of that too, but it didn't seem as severe. There was a lot of good stuff in both, so I normally only watch the EE's, but I think the theatrical FOTR was just about perfect.

I know PJ was trying to appeal to the visceral vengeful spirit of today, but I felt that detracted from some of the majesty of Tokien's work. And it felt out of character for Aragorn.

There are a few scenes like that in the trilogy. Scenes that are maybe more spectacular to watch, but don't deliver the real spirit of the source material. Over all though, I think they do capture the spirit. Just some minor nit picks.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm kind of an exception in these parts because I don't think that Tolkien was a good writer. A great inventer of stories, yes; a great executor of his stories, no. I liked most of PJ's departures, particularly when they put an edge on something that Tolkien left blunt. The only departure that really bothered me was Frodo's tendency to be a _____. He was never that in the books (he couldn't have been), and it did not serve the character in the least.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I personally feel all the TE are great. They have their bumps in the road from the books but I love them. Now, I do think the EE are over the top better for what thats worth. They make up for the bumps and expand how great the story through movie form is.

As far as the quality of the Blu Ray releases. I think they're just fine. To me they look as good as any BR I have in my collection.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

That would be a cliff hanger, but not an exciting enough ending. I think PJ will try to put a climax at the end of each film.

I still predict the death of Smaug at the end of the first and the battle of 5 armies at the end of the second.

ALthough, I think I would miss Smaug in the second movie... so I may be wrong. :)

A mixture of the two, i think. The Hobbit (as in the book) will happen over 2 movies with extra 'White Council' stuff going on at the same time, so as to explain what Gandalf's doing more easily. That's what i think anyway. :D

Also, Derek Jacobi HAS to be in these films in some way!!

I know its been a while but thats what was previously said before all the BS came into play.
