Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I finally read the Hobbit about 8 months ago. I'm really looking forward to these movies even more now.

Totally missed this earlier. I will be curious to see how you feel about both afterwards. Some feel like I do and that it enhances both but of course some feel the opposite.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

It's going to be an a interesting challenge for them and for us. They and we have the challenge of seeing these new movies in the context of LotR, and trying to ignore or do homage to the fact that The Hobbit is very much a children's book, whereas LotR reads more like a history.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think that the Hobbit having a more lighthearted tone actually sets up very nicely for the Lord of the Rings, and having the Hobbit come out second will be an interesting film experience for folks who haven't read the books. They know how it ends, but will they be as excited for this movie series (while self-contained) sets up a lot for the LOTR series.

It will be great to see Smaug and I hope that Weta has a few surprises up their sleeves. I hope that they bring back the production design crew as much as possible!

Thanks to Geb for all the news posting on www.thegd.com too!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm really hoping these movies won't be as self-referential as the SW prequels were. I'd love it if you didn't have to see LotR to really appreciate The Hobbit!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm kind of an exception in these parts because I don't think that Tolkien was a good writer. A great inventer of stories, yes; a great executor of his stories, no.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, I heartily disagree with that. I agree that his style may not be to taste, even unconventional, but you don't write a book as long as Lord of the Rings, as deep as Lord of the Rings, or as compelling as Lord of the Rings, without being a great writer.

But I'm sure you enjoy shocking people with your proffered belief.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I agree that I would be disappointed if the Hobbit were as self-referential as the SW Prequels (Anakin built 3P0....C'mon!) but to see the seeds planted for what comes next will be neat. The story is so separate though, and has nothing to do with Frodo's quest, that they don't need to nod to much at the LOTR films. I just hope that audiences have a moment of realization that Bilbo finds the Ring in gollum's cave entirely by accident, and then aren't too thrown that the rest of the adventure has more to do with Smaug and the fallout of the Lonely Mountain than Sauron!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think what might be strange after the LOTR is seeing all the Dwarfs. The rest should fall into place pretty good (unless it's meant to be more funny)

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

If there's any referential tie-ins, I can see how they can show Khazad-Dum into its former glory.

It's a good point about being lighter or funnier than the LOTR stories. We know the Hobbit was written for children at first, but the whole character of Bilbo was one of a quirky character with a sense of humour. It will be a tricky balance to go from the near slapstick of the early parts of the adventure with the Dwarfes, to the sad battle of five armies :(

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think Thorin will be badass throughout. He is one of my favorite characters that Tolkien wrote.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Almost all the singing was taken out of LOTR but I would miss the Dwarves pre-adventure song if they left it out.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

More songs made it in LOTR than I thought. It turns out that they were just translated into one of the Tolkien languages and used mostly as part of the score. I wonder if they will do something similar this time as well... The song the dwarves sang in Bilbo's house is pretty important to the story though so I can't see them snipping it out successfully.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

The only creature I would want talking would be Smaug.

And I don't want animals setting Beorn's table.

Also, did you ever notice that Gandalf uses a wand instead of a staff in the Hobbit?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

^^^

Never knew that, I don't want to see Gandalf the ferry. :lecture

I also hope they only do Smaug with a voice because the talking trolls and such just wouldn't translate well IMO.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

The dwarves adventure song im sure will be in and the rest shore will mix in much the same way stuff was done with lotr.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

To get the feel of the hobbit though they need to bring as much of that over as possible.
