Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Great news, and they waited for my birthday to announce it. :yess:

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Totally missed this earlier. I will be curious to see how you feel about both afterwards. Some feel like I do and that it enhances both but of course some feel the opposite.

I'll probably end up having to re-read it since this dang movie is taking FOREVER. :)

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Smaug will have to be able to talk with Bilbo, but I forgot all of the differences between the Hobbit and LOTR!!! This thread is going to force me to re-read it - starting tonight!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm actually gonna make a point to not read it any time soon. I want to go in and enjoy it totally on it's own merits. I don't want to be comparing every second to the book like I did with LOTR.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, I heartily disagree with that. I agree that his style may not be to taste, even unconventional, but you don't write a book as long as Lord of the Rings, as deep as Lord of the Rings, or as compelling as Lord of the Rings, without being a great writer.

But I'm sure you enjoy shocking people with your proffered belief.

What I really love is shuffling my feet across a carpet and walking up behind someone and touching their neck, or their ear, and giving them a tiny bolt of static discharge, square on the nerve endings. Why would I use beliefs to shock them when I have an endless supply of electricity? :dunno

I should have been more specific. Tolkien wasn't a good fiction writer. He wrote like a historian, and his style was brilliant as non-fiction prose. It's a mindblowing experience to read an account of so deep a fiction as the history of Middle Earth in that way. Lovecraft wrote like that too (and I don't think Lovecraft was a bad writer or storyteller).

If you compare Tolkien to Hugo or Dostoevsky, the difference is starkly apparent. You can clearly tell which were the world class fiction writers, and which was the English scholar.

Will be doing the same. :hi5:

I think you can compare it as long as you're fair. Too many book snobs expect them to have to stay every single thing truthful to the book. Its just not possible especially given today's movie going audience. I'm maybe a bit too nice but I just stay very open minded for the most part.

P.S. I love Lovecraft.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Smaug can talk, that's cool. Talking Trolls (ie. Stone Trolls) will be kinda weird me thinks.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Forgot about the Tolls. They might have to talk... although I agree it might be weird after the Trolls in LOTR.

I just don't want to see the talking Raven and the bipedal table-setting animals.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

If they don't talk, Bilbo's story to the hobbit children at his birthday party will be a lie.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I believe the Troll from Khazad Dum and the Troll from the battle at the Black gate/Seige of the White Tower were not the same kind of Troll as the ones in The Hobbit. They didn't even look the same as the statues from FotR. So I will have no problem if these ones speak.

Good point.

Good enough for me. :)

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

If the trolls don't speak, and in cockney accents, I'm going to be pissed.

As long as they talk in troll grunts and not english, I'm cool with it.

You are correct. They're totally different breed of trolls.
