Now I really feel like a weakling...

I'm 6'0" 175 lbs and 33 waist. Judging by some of the comparisons I've seen here and elsewhere, I'm guessing I have no muscle whatsover. (but I do have an impressive gut)

But that might be typical for a computer nerd who frequents a message board about dolls. :lol

I might have to check out this Pumping Iron Josh speaks of...

You guys who are into running:

Have you checked out Chi Running?

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=chi+running&x=0&y=0

I just watched the DVD yesterday and the techniques make a lot of sense - hopefully soon I'll get a chance to try them out. It's all about using principles of Tai Chi and Qi Gong to improve your efficiency while using less energy and avoiding injury.

More than 24 million people run in the United States alone, but 65 percent will have to stop at least once this year because of injury. Still others will choose to run through the pain. But in this groundbreaking book, ultramarathoner Danny Dreyer teaches us the running technique he created to heal and prevent injuries and also to run faster, farther, and with much less effort at any age.

ChiRunning employs the deep power reserves in the core muscles of the trunk, an approach that grows out of such disciplines as yoga, Pilates, and t'ai chi. This excellent step-by-step program offers training principles and is easily learned.

Dramatically reduce your potential for injuryMake knee pain and shin splints a thing of the pastGreatly reduce post-run recovery timeCreate a safe and effective training program Make running any distance enjoyable whether you're a beginning runner or a seasoned competitor

That's not too bad... you will just have to get a lot of protein to build the muscle, as your metabolism is probably off the charts. You can get cut faster than the rest of us, that's for sure.

And definitely check out Pumping Iron, it's a documentary about Arnold trying to win his 6th title of Mr. Olympia. It also spends a lot of time with other bodybuilders of the late 70's like Lou Ferrigno, Franco Columbu and many others. It's one of those movies you will watch and want to go to the gym immediately, I love it.

Couple of tips, may seem obvious but not everyone is up to speed

Be sure to eat breakfast, neve skip it, and if you can do exercise in the AM
Eat smaller meals as mentioned earlier, never have that "im stuffed" feeling
Try not to eat after 7:00 PM, thats the hardest intake to burn off
Protein is a must, best before and after working out

A good friend of mine, changed just his eating habits and started doing cardio and in less than a year lost 100 lbs.

The breakfast thing is a tough one for me, i only eat it when I go to work, otherwise I sleep in until like 11-12 and just wake up to lunch.

Thats ok, as long as you eat when you get up, just be aware of what you eat when you get up

Yeah, I've wised up on weekends. It's a Friday routine for me to get pizza for dinner, back in the day I'd eat most of it on Friday and have a couple left over slices over the weekend, but now I split it up even over the whole weekend to spread out the calories, makes a big difference on intake and keeping my stomach shrunk so I fill up quick.

My big enemy is carbs, but I love breads and stuff, and I'm still making progress regardless, so way I see it, if I can accomplish what I want, maybe a bit slower than I'd desire, and still enjoy the things I like, then that's what I'm going to do. I see so many people turn their lives upside down with diets and giving up things they enjoy, when if you exercise and moderate things, you can still enjoy things you like.

Yeah, breakfast never works out for me except on weekends. On weekdays, I have just enough time for a shower before I have to head out at 6:30. I guess I could try getting up earlier, but I am not a morning person *at all* :sick

When I do my workouts, it's always right after work when I get home (about 5:00).

On another note - is there a way to set measurable goals for muscle tone? I mean, obviously, you can see yourself getting more fit eventually, but what about the short term? Just trust that eventually you'll get more tone?

I think with treadmill's, boredom depends on how hard you're going. One of my old co-workers would tell me he'd get bored doing it but he'd trot along at a brisk pace.

I push myself to my limits on the treadmill, I crank up my music, I have to get so mentally focused to get through it there's no chance for boredom.

Well, I've only been lifting a couple weeks, and I'm starting to feel the areas I'm working on firm up. I don't know if there's a way to measure, but I do know if you're making progress you will physically feel the difference.

For tone and def unfortunately alot of it is diet, depending on your physique now

Try high reps or circuit training, toss in the cardio

Well said, it's definitely key to try and eat when you wake up.. and to tone up it takes diet and high reps, cardio, etc.

As Sean said, there are ways to combat treadmill boredom. You can do sprints, use music, try longer distances, try to push your speed higher..etc. I tend to go as fast as I can with sprints and small rest (walk) periods of less than 30 seconds between sprints. I also use motivating music to help me out, like Rocky, Conan, TDK, etc. Also Metal and Punk seem to help.

As for feeling definition...you will start to feel your muscles coming in nicely after only a week or so. If you don't, you are not working hard enough. You need to up your sets or reps or weight.

Yeah, I went to scracth my shoulder while talking on the phone the other night and I was like holy ^^^^, it's firm instead of flabby :lol, nowhere near rock hard, but it's muscle growing, not fat anymore.

I feel embarassed to ask, but I assume the best way to deal with flabby arms is to do muscle work on your triceps right? I mean I do biceps and triceps, but I seem to have excess skin and fat back there and I really want that gone, man ****s and flabby arms are the nastiest things about my body, I can deal with a gut, but unnatural shapes and all just makes me feel disgusting.

Well I'm in a diff situation...Im in a plateau right now, particularly with my bench press, I'm stuck at benching 210lbs (I'm not a big guy, I only weight about 150, 155..So it's hard for me to bench mega amounts of weight like I'm sure alot of guys do :lol) and I just can't lift anymore weight without sacrificing form...So do you guys have any suggestions for me to break out of my plateau that I'm in?

Im assuming your using the bar, have you tried dumb bells then going back to bench?
