Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

I was pleasantly surprised with this show. My sister who is a long time horror fan...in my eyes a few degrees less then myself...said it was really boring. I never really read the books..I have to admit I just judged it to be a part of the ongoing zombie phenomenon that Sean of the dead unfortunately brought back to life. If the books are half as similar as the show I was very wrong..

I came in thinking it was gonna be that way...but I didn't think it was at all.

my highlights:
shooting the dead girl at the beginning. the first death in a show is a child? very brutal and ballsy for tv...hell, even showing it like they did is ballsy for movies.

the slowly set up scenes and atmosphere of the show is reminiscent of something from the early 70's like omega man or something. it builds suspense and gives you a feel for the overwhelming situation.

the father and son he meets dealing with the death and undeath of the mother is something zombie fans have seen many times before, but somehow they pulled it off.

In conclusion...this show has really impressed me with its ability to make nearly cliched situations and source material filled with depth and emotion. I don't know if youve ever had a nightmare with zombies in it...I have and it's been scarier then any movie ive ever seen.. this show comes close to that. I haven't really felt overwhelmed or creeped out with zombies since night of the living dead...maybe dawn of the dead too, in a funner way.

romero made these zombies relatable human beings at first...fulci's were mostly just monsters in zombi. (in city of the living dead it is more like ghosts of former loved ones..closer to this)

I really can't praise this show enough for showing the overwhelming sadness and creepiness that would ultimately come with this sort of a situation. I think the trends of horror in general make movies self aware and too afraid to go "serious." Not that this show is overly bleak or serious though.

It's well done so far. I look forward to seeing them keep it up.

I have to agree with ya! :lecture

I'm fine with the
prison story line
but hope they lose the
chopped hand
part.

Personally I think they are going to go with the chopped off hand thing. When that character was introduced by the closeup of him putting the ax into the cutting stump, the first thing that popped into my head was "Someone is going to be forced to lose a limb to that thing".

Well I caved in and bought the 1st compedium and the omnibus vol 2 and pre-ordered 3. Hopefully one day I will get my hands on the omnibus vol 1 at a halfway decent price.

I don't think I'm going to read them just yet though.....but then again, maybe curiosity will get the better of me.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

I like the softcover trades myself. The Omni's and Compendum are really great for sure, but the wait for those to come out is way too long for me.

Some of the best stuff in the medium IMO, I'm dying for the next trade myself!!

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

As great as the Compendium is as a collection, I don't like reading from such a thick book in my hands. I really like the smaller graphic novels better, though I would really like to get a look at the hardcover volumes.

Re: The Walking Dead - TV Series on AMC

I love how a slow burning plot and character development is considered "boring" by some of today's generation.

There was absolutely not a dull, boring or dead (heh) moment in the entirety of that episode.

I also wonder how long it will take the masses to catch up on the fact that the title isn't really referring to the zombies, but the survivors.

This isn't about zombies at all. That's just the surface conceit. It's about everyday people and how they react and are forced to start living when all of the things that really matter (but have been taken for granted) are stripped away.

Seditionary said his sister said it was " really boring", and I've seen that same complaint from other members of today's ADD youth, like "the end was cool but it started slow".

Here's the first comic book issue online if anyone wants to check it out:

And this is apparently a fan-made intro to the show, with graphics from the comics:

I would say to read them. Just judging from the pilot, the TV show will be different enough to not be completely predictable. And honestly, the comic will give you a greater appreciation IMO of the characters and where they're headed. GREAT STUFF!!!!

my sister is 29, pal.

Maybe she just drinks too much and was too hung over from the weekend.

It's funny that most of my post is disregarded besides like the first line that seems to set people off without really listening. I'm with you...I liked the show..no judgement. It seems like I'm getting lobbed into the ADD youth category.

You can't really blame younger people for thinking something is slow or boring when, I'd gather for the most part, that the dawn of the dead remake is the most relevant recent zombie movie for them. I don't watch television because of all the quick camera and music changes that are constant in most shows and in commercials. Its the opposite of relaxing for me. If I watch a show I watch it on my computer with no commercials.

They've been remaking great movies and pumping them up with action and violence for a pretty long while.

Hopefully this show can help people realize the importance of taking their time to set up suspense and atmosphere in horror themes.
