What did cinemark do?

The Joker wanna-be who shot up the Cinemark theater in Colorado in 2012, well the survivors tried to sue Cinemark and they lost, so now they have to pay $700,000 back to Cinemark for their legal fees. They gambled and they lost. They sued Cinemark looking for a big pay out and they didn't get it. Some people say Cinemark should just eat those fees. Well, if they did, then every time something happened, they'd get sued.

Someone was stabbed in a theater just yesterday. I'm sure he'll try suing too.

Here's a story on it. This is the first I've heard of a boycott though (no Cinemark down under) so I'm not sure if all the facts are 100%.

Very bias article though.

If those complaining were ever sued and won their case, they'd expect the other side to pay their fees. Cinemark didn't shoot those people, that nut job did. They always go after whoever has the money for the big pay out.

$700,000 is a lot of money.

They could have thought it through a little harder before they tried exploiting the death of their family for a payout.

As much as my heart goes out to the families, it wasn't the theater's fault for their deaths. I still can't believe Baltimore gave Freddie Gray's family a six million dollar payout...

"No amount of money can replace the loss of human life" feels right to say but everybody kicks the tires. :dunno

Humanity is a buggy program.

suing cinemark was dumb, what could they do with a crazy guy in there.

but asking the families to pay is pretty crappy. they are a multi million dollar company, pretty crappy. the family losing the case is enough.
its not like cinemark is hurting for money.

Cinemark's lawyers asked for their fees to be payed by the people who sued. It could simply be a legal maneuver. It hasn't even been granted I don't think. As sue happy as this country is becoming, I don't blame companies for fighting back.

It's their right to go after fees as much as it was the families right to try and sue them. The judge did the right thing to shoot the claim down. We don't need anymore incentive for people trying to get a handout.

but then if the company wins (or the lawyers win) Then it becomes the other extreme, then Companies are going to start trying to get out of lawsuits by suing people back, some companies might break the law and threaten to sue if the person hurt wants to complain
slippery slope on both sides

Ban assault lawyers.

That's why you have juries. This jury spoke.

The Social Justice Warriors are all over Cinemark's page. I find it laughable. "Cinemark should've protected those people!" Guess they want armed guards on every street corner and in every business soon, just in case some idiot decides to shoot up the place.

Totally agree but Cinemark is beyond stupid to try and recover those fees, it just looks terrible. Who didn't have the foresight to see this happening?

At this point, it's just the lawyers asking for the fees. The media just ran with the story and flaming the masses, as always. It could be that they would be awarded them, then turn it down or something. With all the lawsuits now and the laws the way they are, maybe this is just part of the game they have to play. Plus, it could be Cinemark's insurance that's asking, since they're the ones that probably would have to pay it. Who knows until it's all settled. The ones suing automatically put in for an appeal.

They knew. You're told going into any lawsuit that IF you lose, the defendant(s) can sue afterwards for "court costs" i.e. lawyer/filing fees.

Just amazes me how people try to use hindsight as a legal premise. No one ever worries, complains or even thinks about security/safety in places UNTIL after some **** goes down.
