To help you breath. People with fractured ribs tend breath shallow to avoid pain and as result, are at a risk of developing atelectasis or worse, collapsing their lung. Unless you're comfortable that your breathing is fine, I'd suggest you ask your PCP to get a you an incentive spirometer. I think you can get them at pharmacies without a script, but not 100% certain.

They should be able to give him one at the doctor's or the hospital.
