Can we agree here that bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are the forefathers of metal? Check...mate.
Metal didn't develop in a void. Many call Led Zeppelin the "godfathers" of Metal. Songs like "Kashmir" show why.
However, I personally do think that Black Sabbath was the first band to produce fully formed Heavy Metal. And yes they like to evoke demonic imagery, but they were never Satanists.
Take the song War Pigs (my fav BS song) for example:
War Pigs
Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'til their judgement day comes
Yeah!
Now in darkness world stops turning
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees the war pig's crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing spreads his wings
Oh lord yeah!
Yes it mentions Satan and witches, but it is about the end of war-mongers at the hand of God by means of Judgement Day. So no, they weren't Satanists.
Even if one could accurately argue that the original lyrical content of metal was Satanic, that doesn't mean that defines the genre.
"Metal" is a kind of music. Simple as that.
Metal is the style of vocals and instrumentals not what the lyrics are about. To say that metal must be satanic is a false generalization.
The nice thing about the Christian metal I linked is you don't have to be religious to enjoy them,it is just good face melting jams.
I appreciate that. I don't want to hear the name "Jesus" in my Metal. Frankly, I see that as irreverent. And I can't stand Christian Rock.
What I do like is when a Metal band can write about something other than rebellion and nihilism. Not to say some of the music I like doesn't touch on that, but if that's all one ever found in any genre it would get pretty old. So I appreciate Metal with an uplifting message from time to time.
I like Viking Metal too. Pagan/Norse themes, i say they're sticking with their roots before the foreign horde brought forth the good news, a cultural re-awareness thing.
I totally agree. The Norse had Christianity forced down their throat which crushed their culture. I totally understand their dislike for Christendom. Although I'm no worshiper of Thor, I get a kick out of songs about him.
What I find distasteful, and frankly ironic, is when a Norse band sings the praises of "Satan" who is a decidedly Christian figure. Meaning, he isn't part of Nordic culture, and comes from the beliefs of those they hate.
Hell yea Mags!!
Check out this song. It will melt your face!

As cool as that was, I have to say that using flesh eating bacteria as a metaphor for accepting Christ into your life is a bit of a stretch.
