Hate to break it to you but that makes you a nerd lol (I'll be buying a lightsaber because that **** is DOPE btw)

Have you watched up to the current season or read the books? Even in the show they've attached great significance to some swords like Light Bringer as a religious artifact (and proof of both his magic-backed power and legitimacy as basically jesus reborn) or blackfyre being a sign of legitimacy of targaryen blood and valyrian steel's ability in general to kill walkers. It'll definitely become more important especially the longer the dragons are alive (dragons being alive again is bringing back older power and such nerd stuff).
Don't get me wrong I love Arthurian legend (Bernard Cornwells Warlord series) but Excalibur NEVER summoned an earth elemental but damascus steel did exist and is still an actual secret which is what valyian steel is based on. Pisses me off so much they made Ice drab it was supposed to be awe inspiring, not get-a-dish-cloth-and-soap-to-clean inspiring. *Also Thorosactually had an expanded role on the show from the books so you should know who that is if you watched the last season

I don't feel there's any sword in the entire series that I would consider "important" - this isn't King Arthur and none of the swords are Excalibur. I certainly had no clue that Ned Stark had a sword called Ice. I may be into collectible 1/6 figures and have been involved in computers and tech my entire life, but I'm not a nerd. :rotfl

If you read the books or watch the show you'll see why Ice is an important sword in the story. Knowing the relevance of something to the overall storyline has nothing to do with being a nerd. Even the casual viewer of the show saw what happened to Ice last season.

That was such a GREAT way to start the season... with Ice being re-forged. It gave me chills.

I'm a fan of the show and have no intention of ever reading the books. I barely have enough time to do anything as it is.

I love it when people use "too busy" as an excuse not to read.

Yet you seem to have plenty of time to be quite prolific here at the forum.

If I had read the books I'm sure I wouldn't appreciate the show as much, .

This is a strange sentiment to me. Why is that? I love the show and the books and feel they both serve to enhance the experience of the other. Watching the show with knowledge of the books gives a richer history to the story and actions characters take that I wouldn't know without the books. It also keys me into little hints that add excitement to the show, being excited to see how they'll execute things. The Mountain and Red Viper storyline being a great example of this.

Likewise, having watched much of the show before reading all the books, I was able to get a grasp on characters more readily in the books having the direct visual reference of the show to go by. It added a dimension to it and rounded out the experience.

That's just me. I know some people read something and waste their time being up in arms over anything the show/movie doesn't do exactly the same as the books. I mostly enjoy seeing how books are adapted to screen.

Longclaw and Needle are also important swords and Longclaw has a distinctive look. Named swords have almost as significance in GoT as they do in LotR.

No time to read those specific books. But honestly, I can't remember the last time I read fiction, let alone the fantasy genre. It's been a very long time. Self employed, home owner, married with two young kids and too many hobbies and interests, most of which I can't and don't spend any time on either (hobbies and interests, not the other stuff ;) )

I've only ever been disappointed with adaptations of material I've been a big fan of, so while I love GoT, I'm hypothesizing I might not feel quite the same way had I first read the books.

Eeh, Ice is supposed to leave an impression and it certainly does that in the show. I think the on screen design falls straight in line with the universe they've created for the show. Some of the more fanciful elements got tweaked and some stayed the same. On that note, as the show goes along its getting further and further away from the books. As long as the show is good I dont really have a problem with that tbh. So long it doesn't become unrecognizable.

I get the feels when I saw the promotional pictures for this. RIP Ned.

Will buy this for sure and probably pick up Tyrion Lannister as well.

KING OF THE NORTH

HBO sells an Ice letter opener that's metal. It's not quite long enough (I think it's about 9 inches, but at 1/6 scale should probably be closer to 10) ... but I might try grabbing one and posing Ned with it.

See, that's a figure for GoT hyper nerds. ;) I had to look him up as I had no idea who it was.

I only meant that to the casual viewer, even one who absolutely loves the show, picking up the Ned figure with a large dagger and the "medium" sword, I doubt many people would say "hey, what about ice?"

Right. I'm a fan of the show and have no intention of ever reading the books. I barely have enough time to do anything as it is.

Read it. You'll never regret it. :lecture

I enjoy both the show and the books. I will say that he is long winded in the books though, too much detail about unimportant things that makes them slightly too long of a read. Regardless, can't wait for the next book!

I love audiobooks and especially radioplays. I'm allowed to use headphones at my job so I listen to them while I work.

Only significant downside is the jarring difference between the audiobook versions of Tyrion and Drogo. They sound so ridiculous when compared to the show.

I started reading them a few months back. The first 3 read very quickly and were great. AFFC has been an absolute brick wall that I feel like I'm slogging through. It's fine though since there's probably plenty of time before book 6.

:lol Trust me, you're not the only one. The one cool thing about book four is the descriptions of the landscapes that have been ravaged by a brutal war. Those bits were my favorite part. But Briennes story was brutal, which was a pity. Just be happy you're getting into these books now. You have to remember books 4 and 5 are one massive book just split up between continents/areas, so there is no Tyrion in book 4, and there is an 11years gap between book 3 and 5. We had to wait 11 ****ing years to see what happened with Tyrion after Storm of Swords. :lol

The Tyrion thing is only jarring to me because the accent makes me imagine Tyrion as a leprechaun.

That and the way he says Brienne.

Bry-een?? Come on now. . and Peh-tire. . . . :slap
