Is it not that well known or what?

I only heard of it through a guy in the states and I think it was shown on a cable channel over here but not widely known in the uk.

Check it out there was a pilot film before this and from that the series came and ran for 7 seasons.
You might like it if you like dope,chicken fingers, geting drunk,hoes,and guns.
Also I would describe it like a real life version of south park.

I just want to know why there are so many lists here that don't include The Wire?

I won't pass judgement on anyone, because it is entirely possible most people in this thread haven't seen the show. I will just say that if you haven't seen the show, you probably should do so immediately, because your list looks silly without it included.

And people in the U.K. have no excuse. I know the show was replayed there, because I started watching it after I read an interview with Alan Moore in which he said that the show was his favorite. C'mon...with a recommendation like that, can you really resist watching it?

I bought the complete series a year ago from Amazon.com. I had it on my wishlist, and they notified me that the set was on sale for $80!!! I suspect if you watch long enough they will put it back up for sale again.
