I'll probably try and buy this day one. I haven't seen it, but I've got a gut feeling that I'm going to love it.

So TD submitted to the Emmy Drama category instead of the easy win in Mini-Series. This puts it and Mathew up against Breaking Bad and Cranston. Don't normally care about such awards but both of these deserve recognition. Going to be tough. Meantime for your consideration.

Even in the drama category, i think it will still win. BrBa will have been off the air for a year at that point. I think BrBa won all its awards last year, that it wont factor in to this years awards. I see Mcconaughey taking Best Actor over Cranston whose already won three. It also seems the Emmys live to give the awards to Movie stars who work on TV.

I love both BrBa and TD, but I do not see how TD does not win. I do not see how MM does not beat Cranston. Both are amazing shows and both are amazing performances IMO. But MM and the TD was just so much more to me.

Can't go against Cranston. MM was amazing in his role but not better than WW. Only person better in acting IMO than those two is Daniel Day Lewis.

But Cranston already won 3 Emmys is the point. Also, BrBa has been off the air for a year by the time the Emmys air this year, Cranston has already been honored for the role, it will go to Mcconaughey this year.

Got round to watching E7 the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it! Can't wait for the finale episode tomorrow night.

To try and compare an eight episode series to one that ran for five seasons seems ludicrous to me. TD has been a wonderful show with supreme acting but you can't compare it to the quality and longevity of Br Ba.

Who's comparing BrBa to TD? You mean at the Emmys Aaron?

I have seen the odd comment here and there saying TD is better than Br Ba. I think it was Rambler with his 'this show meant more to me' comment that prompted my reaction as well.

They are apples and oranges really to me both great, both different. I will say that the themes behind True Detective do resonate with me personally more so than BrBa, which was great, but more general entertainment, than TD which to me actually had a deeper exploration of bigger themes and experiences.

You're right, it's apples and oranges. I really like TD but it's no Br Ba, well not for me anyways.

I guess we both take different things away from both. Whilst clever and thought provoking, I can't connect with Rust's nihilist ramblings. The ritualistic killings and Texas chainsaw like family weirdness is a great work of fiction but I can't believe in it.

You need to take in to account I am yet to see episode eight.

Br Ba explored themes I was happier to invest in and posed serious moral questions IMO. It's all personal opinion but the quality and longevity of Br Ba makes it superior for me.

Great post man! Yeah its all subjective to each viewer, depends what pulls you in more! Both shots are shot wonderfully with even better acting. I LOVE the tone of TD, but im always more attracted to the eerie darker subject matter. Who do you think will win Best Actor though Mcconaughey or Cranston, now that theyre going head to head?

The tone of TD is definitely it's real strength. It's all very much subjective like you say. I still prefer Br Ba & The Sopranos :lol

I think given it's more current and Mcconaughey is astonishing in TD, I believe he will take it.

If you don't mind my saying, you missed out on one element of TD. The week to week speculation, imo, is what made the show fun. I already said this, but basically, the show is a masterpiece, well acted, written, incredible visuals, but like Shindler's List, the subject matter isn't fun. Sure it's got some great comic relief, but what made it fun was coming up with a new theory each week and talking about all the little details(I guarantee you missed some) and speculating what was or wasn't going to be important to the case. And the last episode also has a huge impact in the overall story. When you're done, you may have a lot easier a time identifying with Rust.

For me, TD is the tighter ever so slightly more realistic show but only because Breaking Bad ran as long as it did. I have an easier time believing the events of TD could play out over the course of 12 or however many exactly, years of Rust's life, vs everything that Walt accomplishes in what a year? Two?

That actually makes perfect sense but unfortunately I didn't have that luxury as we were about 5 episodes behind you. The show is well written and well acted and I love the visuals, I completely agree, and I definitely intend to watch it all over again soon because as you mention, I will definitely have missed details. The depth and dialogue are a real strength of the show as well. I can't wait to see the final episode tonight.

But don't you think it is easier to keep a show tight that is going to run over 8 episodes? To run a show for 5 seasons and there not be a weak season is a true feat IMO. You could argue that every season got that little bit better with Br Ba which I think is practically unheard of. So many shows start off so well but eventually decline to a shadow of it's opening few seasons. We will never know if TD with Rust and Marty could have the sort of success that Br Ba has had stretched over five seasons.
