Well, that question can be asked for any contact sport like Football, Rugby, Hockey, etc. You should know the risks this day and age and make the decision if it's worth it or not. They didn't know back then but brain damage is very possible with any contact sport. It's good that fights are months apart nowadays, can you imagine back in boxings early days the amount of punishment they took with many fights every year. Sugar Ray Robinson had 85 amateur fights and 200 pro fights officially and he wasn't a defensive fighter by any means.
I boxed, played basketball, football, Lacrosse, wrestled, karate tournaments, and more. I have had a few concussions, a torn acl, broken nostril, and broken fingers, and a torn rotator cuff. The thing is though, all these injuries happened in practice or sparring. Never during a session that mattered. Thinking back on it, I'm not sure if it was worth it. Now I watch a guy like GSP who has a great mind. He was a nerd growing up just like I was. I would compete in boxing tournaments and chess tournaments in the same weekend. I've studied and learned many of things. The thing is I'm 28 and I'm having trouble remembering things when I rarely forgot anything. The other day it took me almost a minute to get out of bed due to a shoulder and collarbone injury. Now back to GSP, he has been in two recent wars to name a few. One with Condit and now Hendricks. This isn't even talking about sparring. He's a millionaire with plenty of life to go. I can't say the trade off was worth it. Youth for a life of fighting.
