Underrated Horror Films?

I saw Ils (THEM) last night. Underrated or overrated? Hard for me to say. It was most interesting because it is a true story. It actually made major news reports in the US at the time, but was quickly forgotten. It kept my attention and worked well at maintaining suspense, but all the while I kept thinking it wouldn't be quite as effective for a US audience for reasons I will put in a spoiler bracket. Also, once I found out more about the ones causing terror, I was not real impressed (possibly my own naivete). Again, I will tag in a spoiler bracket. Still, I can't make the call on how well it is rated in the media. I liked it but not enough to add it to the library...

Why not as scary in USA?
Because in America, many of us have guns in the home and can defend against the antagonists in this film rather easily IMO

Who are antagonists?
a bunch of bored kids

I remember seeing this previewed in Fangoria and thinking, "interesting concept" but while it'd work in Germany, I don't see how this'd work here.

Hey Nam, remember the scene in Indiana Jones ROTLA, when the Arab starts twirling that big sword and Indy pulls out his pistol and unceremoniously puts a cap in him? :exactly:

Yeah I seen this movie and also mentioned it in another thread. Yeah I liked the movie, but agree that once you find out who the antagonists are I wasnt impressed. This was the idea for "The Strangers", it was Ils which prompted the idea behind making the strangers...or so I read.

Now, see, you want to make that a true horror movie:

have all that occur in the first act. Have a sympathetic judge sentence them lightly since they're "kids." They go to jail and get out when they're 18. Because of today's entitlement generation never excepting responsibility for their actions, these guys now blame you for ruining their lives, find equally spoiled brats and return for revenge with a well-armed posse. Close the movie with the new judge blaming the victim for ruining their childhoods as they're given another light sentence.

Great idea Nam. Has a "Sleepers" vibe to it and that was a great film, IMO.

Even though not a horror movie. Always loved Sleepers. In a little thing I love to tell people when my friend come by the new house to visit is the reform school from Sleepers is right down the road from me. When the realtor was taking us around showing us properties, i mentioned that something about the building there looked very familiar and she told me that's were the filmed all the those scenes.

My wife just sighs every time I go to tell someone the story. It's not the coolest movie location I've ever been around, but it's one of those little geek things I always like to share.

That is very cool!

I really like that movie. You should take some pictures for us.

What's not horrific about a bunch of butt-raping guards and seeing Kevin Bacon in the buff?

Which probably explains why:

Never seen Sleepers.

A few days ago I watched Island of the Dead...it wasnt a zombie movie. About these flies that eat flesh sorta thing...it was interesting, but a little slow. I just get a kick out of insect movies. Especially those cheesy 70's jams like the Swarm or Ants.

Never saw Sleepers.

I will say though that a movie that used to scare the balls off of me was the 70's movie The Sentinel. I never hear alot of people talking about it and when I bring it up no one knows what the hell I'm talking about :lol I like that movie alot though.

You're a few pages late youngster. ;)

Me too! :D Gives me more money to chase down the absurdly expensive Amazon/Borders must-haves.

I'll have to look into Bunker. If you're into oldschool 70's stuff, there was a cool one called The Sentinel.

Classic 70's horrific ghost story FTW!

Dude nam, you're awesome :lol Someone knows what I'm talking about.

It's one of those awesome movies that you watch and think, WTF?! And it's age just makes it all the more creepy. It warrants a second viewing just to see it all. This was more deserving of the type of hype Rosemary's Baby received than Rosemary's Baby (which I think, even to this day is extremely overrated).

And I agree with you 100%. I honestly never cared for Rosemary's Baby. My Mom used to always say "how can you like horror and not like it" and to be honest I just never saw the appeal. The Sentinel is just creepy and it has that raw feel to it because it's old. Like a 'what the hell is this?' feel.
