You guys should picket their Sunday morning services. Bring a good radio boombox or maybe a car with good sound and start playing Dio during mass. Invite some gay friends to help you protest, if you know any.

I'm sure they'd somehow figure out a way to get it stopped for violating their right to picket or something.

It's already been done and continues to happen on and off. We hear about it once in awhile in the news.

I wish I could go.....dayum I'd even take one of my friends and start a snogging session right in front of them, I've done it before with some Bible freaks that started judging my GF and I in the street one time :lol.
I would gladly upset these idiots by doing it again :rock :lol

I would but I couldn't be responsible for the fall out of idiots being exposed to such sexiness :wink1: :lol.
Besides, those are part of our private stash :monkey5

These Westboro morons on the other hand it would be a pleasure to watch their heads explode as we made out :lol

I really don't like people who preach/judge or are ignorant about others when they know nothing about them.

Try living in the same city as these people...

I've had several encounters with them, many of which have been right outside of our church. The funny thing is that it's an LCMS Lutheran church and is easily one of, if not the most conservative church in the area. Heck, my dad just about started swinging one time when he was called a "God damned ******" by one of the older guys simply because he had gone out to their car to get my mom's purse.

Don't let the signs, protests, and seemingly stupid religious beliefs fool you... they are very intelligent people, at least when it comes to being booksmart. As it was mentioned earlier, most of them are lawyers, but the ones that aren't are very well informed with what the law says about free speech and exactly how far they can push it.

Also, outside of their extreme beliefs, they're really very friendly people. My mom actually worked with Margie Phelps at the Kansas Department of Corrections and never had a single problem with her. The crazy thing is that there have been times that she had walked right past her while they were standing outside of our church and even made direct eye contact. Never once did she say a thing to my mom about our church or beliefs, probably because doing so would have cost her a job. Like I said, they know the law inside and out.

Honestly, there's now wayto stop them aside from ammending the Constitution and taking away free speech. The anti-Phelps picketing, motorcycle barricades, etc. are good ideas and all, but it's still just giving them the attention they crave. Picketing their church/compound and blaring music will only lead to noise complaints and citations... and I know fora fact that they have Topeka police officers that are sympathetic to their cause.

The best thing is to do what 99% of Topeka has learned to do... IGNORE THEM. True, it won't make them go away. Nothing will, but it'll save you the headache and potential for legal repercussions in the long run.

Update to the guy who has to pay the legal fees.

Dillsburg, Pa. - A local veterans group is helping a York County father, whose Marine son died in Iraq (web | news) .

Sunday night, the Dillsburg VFW donated a check for $1,303 to Albert Snyder's legal fund. ABC 27 Talkback:

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church picketed his son's funeral. Albert Snyder sued and won. But a higher court overruled and ordered Snyder to pay the church's legal fees, totaling more than $16,000.

I really think that this is ultimately the only thing that will get them to stop.

The problem is that they are so good at inciting aggression that it is very unlikely that you could get others on board with ignoring them. It really seems their mission is to get attention and they are incredibly good at doing it.

I wish they would just drink the poisoned Kool-aid already! :monkey4

takes all kinds, doesn't it? the country is full of these kinds of cults and they certainly are not the most extreme but they may be the smartest.

all you can do is ignore them because anything else just plays into their hands. this cult learned from scientology and sues anyone for even thinking about saying something against them. because this country has to tolerate everyone's superstitions they will win and have their "church" funded.

look i love the fact we have freedom of speech and you have to take the bad with all the good but the fact that we let the law say it's ok to disrupt a funeral, that has nothing to do with what they a picketing, is just asinine. there has to be a way to circumvent someone's freedom of speech for a greiving family, i don't know how you could do it but maybe it would just be something like they can't gather in front of funeral or wake.

"Their freedom of speech ends when it begins to effect others."

~~Can't this be considered slander?? If they're yelling "God hates ****" then they're insinuating that I"m a homosexual, which I find offensive. And if I were in the military it could result in me getting discharged. (I have nothing against homosexuals, but if I can sue them for it I'd do it without hesitation.)

Wow, good for them. I when to school in Dillsburg. Glad to hear their stepping up like that. I thought I heard where Bill O'Reilly was paying this guys legal expenses?

He said he would but I don't think the guy took him up on his offer.

Because people should know about this hate organization so they do everything they can to put them out of business.

I personally think this falls under "can't yell fire in a crowded theater".

They could change the law where people can't picket closer than 1,000 yards away from a funeral or something.

Anyway, this shouldn't be protected under the first amendment IMO....
