i contacted Weta mainly because of this, the building on the left is up too high.
Weta have offered me a refund or a replacement which is good :)

Wow after reading this thread and seeing the pics, this piece looks lazy. Is this what is to come of Barad-Dur???

bd is a lot carving&sculpting, but it is vastly simpler in term of construction as once the mold is done, it's just carbon copies and the paint is just blanket black..cant get any simpler than that.

The rivendell has like hundreds of tiny pieces all with different colors they need to glue together (and make a mess of). BD is just 1 giant sculpt so the outcome should be more closely resemble the ap photos..

I wanted to get into the weta environments for a long time, i was sure rivendell was the one to start but after all the issues & subpar finished quality i couldnt, and then bd with the high price & no eye.

guess it's just not meant to be...

1500 man hours is NOT simpler........... ;)

There are way too many angles and spikes to get "lost" in the remolding and finishing, so simpler I do not think so....:slap

Weta has pretty much priced me out of this line. First was the tiny Prancing Pony with the un-tiny price. Then Rivendell's flaws and high price. Now it's BD and it's huge price. There's a line between product price point and value and in my opinion, that line has been crossed by leagues.

I'm seriously tempted to just sell all of my environments and be done with it.

I was really ready to drop the bucks on this environment but when I saw the in hand pics of the early arrivals I was dissapointed, but only because of the price. The higher the price, the more I expect, bad quality makes you question dropping hundreds. I would recommend you do keep a few of the ones you really like.

you are not understanding what i said. Creating BD is not simpler, i never said it was. But to mass produce them once the mold WAS CREATED is a lot simpler than to mass produce rivendell. I guarantee you there is no way they will hand sculpt/carve each piece "angles & spikes", it's all from the mold, the only hand crafting will be the paint & putting it together(which is infinitely simpler than rivendell)

Not by a mile, simpler, how, a mold is a mold by what you are saying....

I think what he's saying is that BD should be one mold, cast, black paint, done. Rivendell was several molded parts, cast, glued together, painted, done. With Rivendell the problem is largely in the attachment of these extras, the buildings, poles, columns, etc. where the factory can't seem to bother with caring. Hopefully with BD this won't be an issue.

exactly, and not several but many small pieces, all have to hand glued together. Which is why you have all those crooked buildings & bridges etc..

BD is just 1 or 2 piece cast, paint it black and done...

Alot of Rivendells have alot of issues, but alot are also of a good quality.
That bridge that BigBunny showed us is messed up - mine is perfectly straight and looks gorgeous. The environment overall looks stunning, the only flaws mine has is one floating pillar. I guess i just got lucky :dunno

you should send the chinese worker who made yours a thank you card, it's the least you can do!

As FE said some had bad luck like above but many of us came out just fine and I'd imagine more are that way than the other.

Plus for its size this was a bargain compared to the upcoming Barad-dur

Honestly it seems the Howe Smaug was some turning point for Weta. They did so right by the collectors on that piece for what may have been a more minor issue, but they fixed it no questions asked. The expense must have been enormous. Since then, the attitude seems to have softened toward the collector with regard to quality. Quite frankly they should be ashamed of some of these pics, that floating building is just awful. Sure they refund or replace but...To me the paint job is really shoddy on some of these as well, the weak washes of blues and greens on the buildings, ugh. I really want to like this piece but...

Do you have Rivendell? You do realize all these photos are zoomed in to infinity?

Thats the key. Most of the issues aren't even noticeable to the eye and only look bad because of the large file sizes.

Had it, couldn't wait to sell it. Yes there is zoom involved but some off these issues are beyond shoddy.

Like I said some got bad ones but most are just fine. I love mine.

Sadly I can only imagine the issue with buying one on eBay given the specificity of questions one must ask about QC.
