I realize it's made by hand but there's no indication they are made to order. It has gone in and out of stock, which lead me to believe they just pre-made batches.

Its made to order as far as I understand things. Basically, I think he's given a batch of orders and then gets started.

Ah, interesting. They really should explain that in the product description then. I don't mind waiting, knowing that, but I had no clue. I guess maybe that was some info they gave elsewhere.

I'm sure WETA mention that the maps and contract are subject to Daniel Reeves time table / workload :dunno

It says "Available in strictly limited supply and always subject to the artist's availability, Thorin's Map will be shipped direct from Weta in New Zealand and includes a printed Certificate of Authenticity signed by hand by Daniel Reeve. It ships folded in a vinyl bag in a plain cardboard box for protection."

Which I took (as I think most would) to mean that when it's in-stock, it's in-stock, and when they run out then they run out until he can get to making more.

I actually don't think these are made to order, because on the Wetacollectors board they left his message on 10/10:

Our first batch has just sold out. Both this map and the Contract of Bilbo Baggins are proving extremely popular.

Please note supply we will be slow to get more maps in stock, as we are dependant on one person, Danie Reeve, to make them by hand. And of course he is still busy on other movie related projects.

So if you wish to get one before Xmas, I would recommend getting a place in the queue asap, by making a pre-order

Thanks

Tim

So, it definitely doesn't sound like it's made to order, but rather made in batches when the artist has time. And if it's not available, it wouldn't say so. It would be listed as a pre-order, which it is not.

So... who knows. Oh well, it'll get here when it gets here. Maybe I'll just send Weta a message and see if I can get an answer from them. :)

EDIT:

Got an e-mail back from Weta. The map was sent on the 18th. For whatever reason their system just didn't update with the new status! So that's cool, now it's just a wait for the mail. :)

Really love the Key to Erebor prop! It's beautifully done and nicely weighty. Can't wait to get my display together once the map arrives!

Got my parchment map from weta yesterday. So with the extra money. This is a beautiful piece of art. The texture combined with the moon runes make it that much more special. I used weta points on it so it was only around $100 or so.

I doubt it, total fees on this are likely around 12 percent and they padded the shipping. They didn't make much money, maybe a buck or two, but I bet they were more than happy to break even on a collectible that is still being made and produced by the manufacturer. I would have expected around 20 for this, a 33% haircut, based on some of the other items selling on eBay still being made by weta.

Also note they may have received 10% in Weta dollars for the purchase.

Yeah but what did the seller pay Weta for shipping which you have to factor in.

My Thorin arrived today. Very happy with it. Now to find some space to set aside for the rest of the Dwarves!
