Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

It looked like they also used the white Meyers Shatner masks in Season 2 of Sons of Anarchy.

I wanted to re-stress I don't mind offering heads neckless as well long as there are around 6 people interested. We have a list started for Kirk neckless so far on the first page.

The current sized heads were made for HT narrow and slim.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

I'm happy with how the Kirk's have turned out. Does WGP know when the other heads will be available up-scaled and neckless? The neckless part is no big deal, but it would be convenient to not have to Dremel too much.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

WGP please add me to the list of Captains, interested in all 5 of them from the TV series and most wanted is Picard.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

put me down for the neckless Kirk head please, scaled up if possible.

I painted up my BA Kirk head this weekend (I'll see if I can take some pics - and it looks great, though I agree that it's on the small side unfortunately.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

Anybody else still old school like me, using cheap basic Dragon bodies for customs? Probably what I'll mostly do here but I want to put one of Spenser's green wraparounds on Kirk, and trying to figure out what will look best under the V-neck.

Yup. I bought up a bunch of Dragon's over the years. Still a sturdy, dependable body.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

Here is my crew so far...
The sizes of the figures are off due to the angle of the camera.
Kirk, Spock and Bones are in Nanjin uniforms. Scotty is in an old Playmates uniform while Sulu is temporarily in a Playmates reboot shirt.
Kirk, Sulu and Scotty are WGP sculpts painted by Spenser (who also cut down the necks by half). Spock and McCoy are sculpted and painted by Spenser. My issue with Kirk is not so much the scale as the thinness of the sculpt.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

Those Nanjin uniforms are amazing.

Yeah, the Nanjin uniforms are like nothing else, they truly are beautiful...

This pic illustrates a few things:

You can see why custom Trek boots are needed over stock German jack boots!

Nanjin's unis are out-of-this world good - I can't wait to see what WGP comes up with for Rand/Uhura!!!

The slightly thin sculpt on Kirk continues to throw the likeness for me, if only a little. When I stretch it just a tiny bit horizontally, it's like "Wow, that really looks like Shatner shrunk down to 1/6 scale!"

Spenser's sculpts really mingle well with WGP - looks like different skin tone was used from his sculpts to WGP's, tho?

The scale on all of the heads looks a bit small. I know HT makes gorilla hands, but both hands and feet on the figures look just huge compared to the heads.

Overall, you can see the potential greatness of this project. Even though this pic is a bit ragtag, you can see how it's allllllllmost there!

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

I have Nanjin's clothing sets and Spenser's head sculpts, and IMHO Nanjin's uniforms are in a class of their own. I wish he'd made more uniforms...
As for Spenser's sculpts, I love them, the only one that I find a bit small is Spock's. Kirk and Bones look great.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

I have the Nanjin Trio and you can see the size difference with the Scotty head. I wish Nanjin had made more male and female crew uniforms to offer separately. They are the perfect thickness and coloring. I understand that there is a problem with the boots so I haven't tried swapping the bodies out to TTs. My plan is to keep the Bones and McCoy heads and just swap out the Kirk portrait. I'll use Spenser's green wrap uni for SuU Kirk.

I'm kinda hoping that the seamstress that WGP are using can sorta take notes from the Nanjin uniforms. I have the Nanjin Kirk and Spock portraits and I agree on the scale difference. For me, those portraits are kinda close, but neither one hits the mark. WGP can have the definitive Kirk by scaling it up and making it a tiny bit wider in the face. And I CANNOT WAIT to see their Spock!!!! (Hint! :wink1:   )

Im going to finish and sew the proto's for Yeoman Rand, nurse chapel and Spock and ship them to rick. Please note the shirt for spock will b changed when i get a matte material i suggested to Rick. I will have them done by the 1st offical weekend of january.

This is great to hear. I'll have to check, but I think the chest patches and sleeve ribbons might be iron on, which keeps them from being too bulky. Also one of the great things about the Nanjin uniforms is the relative thinness of the fabric. My concern with some of the other uniforms being worked on is that the material is so thick it looks like they are wearing sweaters instead of shirts. I'll try to post some closer photos of the Nanjin uniforms in the next day or two, but again the base fabric will make a huge difference. I don't know if it's a trade secret or something, but it might be worth shooting Nanjin a quick note to ask.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

Agreed, the secret of Nanjin's uniforms is the material. It's simply amazing. Very thin, fantastic feel and color, and it just drapes very well.

Im working with a matte fabric that does not feel like sweater material I told Rick we need to avoid knit. based on what i looked at it is double knit but that is too thick so I went with a fabric that will have richness of color but thin and stretches very well. I looked at museum pics of the rick rack bands so mine will look more like them than the iron on bands from najin. So it will look more authentic. Im looking at pants fabric and want to know if its ok if it is thicker than shirt before I tell rick to get fabric.

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

I think the ones your refering to is the spens ones i saw in jersey like material and yes it has apperance of sweater in pics and in person. Rick showed me pics of the different companies doing these uniforms and we wanted to use material different so we didnt step on toes. I have worked with various lycra based matterials and I know what we can use. im testing out some stretch suiting for pants for a proto but im thinking about using a knit for pants so im looking at polyester knits now since for that time they used dacron

From what you wrote, I think you have a good handle on the material for the tunic. I am by no means an expert on tailoring, not my area, but thin material with rich color sounds right for the tunics. I also like the sound of using actual braid - working at this scale won't make it look too thick, though, right?

You've made me curious about the polyester knits; I'm at the start of a couple days off, may have to swing by a fabric store to check this out. I'd have to look at it and feel it to have a better idea of how it might drape.

Promising start! :clap

Re: WGP's Classic Star Trek (being cast now)

no im using embroidery thread and some ribbon that i suggested to rick which should be thin like the decal ones used by nanjin I didnt like them because they looked so fake not like the pics and episodes i saw. I thought it was a rick rack ribbon but i was wrong its a solid ribbon with long zig zag stitching to hold it down. but afar it looks like rick rack ribbon
