I'd rather A) not have to go through and delete all the nonsense personal attacks and/or B) not have to lock these political threads-- but if I had to choose between the two, it'll be a Stallone lock-down so please keep it civil guys. We're all "brothers & sisters" on here so state your opinion and thoughts but respect other's and their right to do so as well. Don't agree with everyone but please keep it civil.

Thanks.

P.S. Shai, be nice or we'll start a Quebec Seperatist thread.:horror And I was on one of those buses that trecked into Montreal back in '95 and stood listening to Jean as that massive flag was passed overhead-- but more caca and I'll text Steven Harper to cut you out of the Great White North.:naughty

The only controversial thing he said there is that Jesus was black.

I believe he said it. I just disagree with the right wing smear machine. Let's take a look.

“God damn America … for killing innocent people."

We do kill innocent people. Wright is right to be upset. I think context is important here. Wright is inverting a popular refrain to make us think about our government's actions (and I shouldn't have to remind everyone that our government is not our country). He's saying "on this score we do not deserve to pat ourselves on the back with another mindless refrain of 'God bless America.'" I don't deny it's heated rhetoric but Wright has been quite clear (not that the right wing propaganda machine will pay attention) that he was not condemning the American people full stop.

“God damn America for threatening citizens as less than humans."

We do this, unfortunately.

“God damn America as long as she tries to act like she is God and supreme.”

I can see how this line sets people off, but I also see what he's getting at. The US basically does whatever it wants and routinely ignores international law and accords - including the Geneva Convention.

“We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki. And we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because of stuff we have done overseas is now brought back into our own backyard. America is chickens coming home to roost.”

This is all true.

“The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color. The government lied.”

I believe this is false, but it's a popular conspiracy theory. I don't think this really supports the idea he's a racist who hates America.

“Barack knows what it means living in a country and a culture that is controlled by rich white people. Hillary would never know that. Hillary ain’t never been called a ******. Hillary has never had a people defined as a non-person.”

All these things are true.

“Hillary is married to Bill, and Bill has been good to us. No he ain’t! Bill did us, just like he did Monica Lewinsky. He was riding dirty.”

I don't know where this is coming from. To be honest it sounds like Wright lost it around the time Obama's campaign really began gaining steam. He probably became self-important, as a lot of these figures do, and began letting his more fringe beliefs come to the fore. Obama has said he's never heard Wright talk like this before, and there's no credible reason to disbelieve that.

Basically I think Wright holds some fringe beliefs that are common in the black community (Jesus was black, the CIA is responsible for AIDS and crack) but there's nothing here demonstrating he's a racist who hates America. I'd stick him in a loony box with Palin's pastor and some of McCain's extremist friends and ignore the lot of them.

You know, I just knew you'ld come up with some lame ass justification for this bigot's rhetoric, but I think you've actually outdone yourself. :rotfl

"We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki.' True, and true. And hopefully someday you will be able to forgive the U.S. Government for chosing to bomb those two cities instead of allowing 200,000-300,000 US and Allied soldiers from dying as a result of trying to invade Japan using conventional land, sea, and air forces. Hopefully someday you will be able to forgive the U.S. for actually trying to end a war, they didn't start but were drawn into when attacked at Pearl Harbour.

Unfortunately, the fact you would even attempt to justify anything this clown says reveals as much about your character as it does the person who said it in the first place.

And unlike some of the left wing radicals who would try and justify any of this guys hate rhetoric by saying that perhaps this is his way of extending his 15 minutes of fame, I'm not going to try and assume why he's said any of the garbage that's come out of his mouth the past 20 years or so, other than to say I'm going to take the old-fashioned approach here and actually take him at his word. I'm going to assume that he says the things he does because he actually means them, and believes them. I know this is a foreign concept to most socialists, but then again common sense concepts usually are.

Who said anything about justification?

I'm going to take the old-fashioned approach here and actually take him at his word.

No you're not. You're going to cherry pick quotes and ignore him when he says point blank he didn't mean what you claim he means. There's no need to lie.

bcm77 has got me Greel/Sin and the black Voc robot. Hopefully soon he will find me a Tom Baker and the silver robot. Then my series will be complete (besides the Five I have on order from BBTS).

I can't wait to see pics of 3,7, and 8. (especially 8 in light of recent developments). :D

If 8 was based off the recent developments he would be in for the series 5 line not the classics. Haha I love derailing thread with talk of Who toys.

You make a lot of assumptions.

Really? What assumptions am I making? These are universally accepted figures based on calculations of pre-existing casualties during the war in the S. Pacific. It is extremely doubtful you will find figures anywhere that contradict these, but by all means, feel free to try.

And while you're at it, why not tell us exactly how many additional deaths of US and Allied soldiers would you consider to be acceptable in order to have had those nuclear strikes averted? And how many more US and Allied POW's would you have found it acceptable to rot and die in Japanese POW camps?
I know it's not in your nature to actually answer any questions aimed in your direction so let me help you out by answering first.......zero! That's the number, the only number, I will ever accept and I think we both know the only way that was accomplished.
Perhaps Jeremiah Wright finds it reprehensible that the US dropped those bombs, but I doubt the parents of all those young boys who returned home safely do, or any other Americans for that matter who love their country.

We need to stop with the Hiroshima stuff because in this fight both sides are right and wrong. The last time i checked the majority of the people who died in Hiroshima were civilians and honestly that is never acceptable, even in a time of war. If Russia had done something like that we would still be lecturing them about it.

Now the flip side of that is if the bomb was never dropped who knows what would have happened, and yes it did curtail Americans losing their lives and stopped the war with Japan. But saying shame on us for the innocent blood we have on our hands is not a bad thing, we need to be reminded that just because these things happen in another part of the world doesn't mean we should be flip about it.

So if Wright finds it reprehensible then there is nothing wrong with that becuase that kind of slaughter in reprehensible, but what needed to be done was done so lets move on.
