LOTR is this generations SW.

Nothing will be this generations Star Wars. Kids today have so many different things to occupy their time that most have all ready forgotten LOTR. Also there is no way that LOTR will have the same cultural impact that SW did. Other movies and tv shows often quote SW but I never hear any LOTR references. Its not that the LOTR movies are worse its just that they came out in a time where movies don't hold the same power as they did.

Before Lucas raped my childhood by releasing Ep 1 - 3, I would have said hands-down SW.

But all things considered I like LOTR better.

It was meant that it's about as close as you can get. Otherwise yeah i agree kids today meh!:sick

I think the general public went more ape^^^^ with the Pirate trilogy than LOTR, so I would it say it was closer to SW levels, but neither are really that close.

Well the movies did have an impact within popculture within a few years of their releases (look at shows like The Simpson's, Will and Grace, Family Guy, Robot Chicken that all had repeat jokes in relation to the films or things in the films). That's all died out in the last few years of course, but there was a time when LOTR references were out there more.

If we look at the cultural impact of the books, well then, a much longer history is seen through music, art, fantasy published after LOTR and so on and so forth.

So, will the films have a lasting impact in popculture? Who knows. It's very evident that the books, however, will continue to have an impact in other ways though (as has been the case for decades now).

I have to say it's Star Wars. Not because it's better written, I happen to feel the LOTR films are far superior story wise. But I just feel more nostalgia and have more fun with the Star Wars films.

As a kid Star Wars meant the world to me. Until LOTR that is. The films knocked the SW OT out of it's top spot for me years ago. And LOTR is not a "trilogy". ;)

OT, will always be one of my true loves in life...LOTR is a great triliogy as well, but it didn't create a love that has been with me for the last 30 years...

My all-time trilogies..
1...OT Star Wars
2...LOTR
3...Die Hard
4...The Godfather...Godfather would have been number two if it was just I & II, but III sucked so much ass that I had to fault it...
5...Back to the Future...

***Indy would have be here, but Lucas & Speilberg had to make that IV one***

I like the LOTR trilogy, but frankly I tend to think it's really overrated and at times a little boring. The Star Wars Original Trilogy is what started it all and is the clear benchmark for movie trilogies.
