Why have all the PFs depreciated so significantly?

Yup! Same here. I only collect the best which is why I stick with Sideshow's PF and 1:1 SW lines. I get the 12" figures too, but those are for my daughter's collection. The SS 12 inchers are great for beginner collector's (like her) who want a great product at a great price.

For people who consider the 12" figures to be the main event in Star Wars collecting, I won't argue. But for me they are secondary.

No, for a "beginner" collector like her, it is a great opportunity to build a collection at an affordable price. If I couldn't afford Sideshow's higher-end items, I'd be all over the 12" line too, and I'd be happy with it.

Yeah, I WISH money issues allowed for more PF's. But I have to choose carefully. So far I only have one and have 2 on order. I hope to be able to get a few more later down the line, but money is sorta tight.

That said, even if I DID have loads of cash, I'd probably still get the 12 inch line.

Okay, I'll say something controversial: It doesn't bother me that the PFs haven't held their value. I was, after all, able to buy my first four well below their retail value. And they look great in my collection.
