Maleficent didn't have any trouble against ASM2, Godzilla, or Edge of Tomorrow (or DOFP for that matter.) :monkey3

On a semi-related note Disney needs to stop sucking and release Frozen and Maleficent in 3D. This "overseas only" thing they've got going now for home 3D is BS. /firstworldproblem

Off the top of my head I think ASM2 came out 3 weeks before it hit theaters, then Godzilla a week before, then Maleficent the week after, then Edge Of Tomorrow a week or two after that. That's competition Nam.

ASM2 left a huge disappointment gap that should've been filled by X-Men. I'd give you Godzilla, but that's a one and done flick, so nope. Maleficient probably got all of Singer's gays and chicks (maybe - though the $750mil had to have some Jackman fanatics in it). Edge of Tomorrow was a flop so not sure how that took money away. So you're saying any movie that isn't a comic book movie, or is a boxoffice dud is a threat to X-Men? :lol

Movies like EOT might have flopped, but late in DOFP release, it's obviously going to make a dent DOFP late box office earnings. I believe it made like 18 million opening weekend, by that time DOFP was only making about 5 million at the BO.

Guardians had very little competition, and Cap had zero competition which is why they were number one at the box office multiple times.

X-Men Apocalypse is obviously going to make more money than DOFP as long at the reviews and word of mouth are positive.

I'm not sure I share your optimism here. DOFP did extremely well, and presumably the next film won't have Stewart and McKellen, who were both heavily advertised and big draws with this franchise. Assuming Singer, Jackman, Fassbender, McAvoy, and Lawrence are still involved though, I'm fairly confident it will be a good movie and a hit.

Cap went head to head with Noah and Divergent. Then weathered Rio 2 and Transcendence (which pushed TWS out of IMAX.) So it absolutely had competition. It just destroyed it. :)

Notice how he conveniently ignored that very point in my previous post? :lol

Much sturdier competition than ASM2, Maleficient and Edge of Tomorrow. Especially Rio 2 being a PG - family friendly animated flick. :lecture

I don't think Stewart and McKellen had any significant draw. Jackman, Fassbender, and Lawrence are the big three in this franchise and they don't seem to be going anywhere for a while.

Disagree. Look at the franchise as a whole. First Class is second to last in box office earnings.

Which is why I ignored Nam's point, Stewart and McKellen aren't bringing in much fans, Fassbender, Jackman and Jen Lawrence are the big draws.

That's because it was coming off of two of the worst films in the series, with a brand new relatively unknown cast, since then each of those actors had a major boost in notoriety, especially J Lawrence who's now the highest paid actress in Hollywood. Hell, even Nicholas Holt has become a leading man, with several successful movies since FC under his belt.

So by your rational then, there's no excuse for DoFP to not have cracked a Billion, since it was coming off of Wolverine (successful), and all the other actors already had "a major boost in notoriety."

Box Office competition, 3 movies that came out that month made over 500 million each worldwide.

Wolverine was successful, but not universally loved, most people thought it was okay at best.

DOFP on the other made noise, being the highest grossing superhero movie of the year so far while being critically praised.

There's going to be much more hype for the next film.

There always seems to be a bit of a "Part III" curse but I think Cap definitely has enough audience goodwill now to finally have a movie that cracks the $300 million domestic ceiling assuming the Russo Bros deliver another solid movie.

I feel the exact same way about XM:A, I think both movies will do a lot better at the box office now that there's a lot more hype and anticipation for both franchises after the success of DOFP and TWS.
