It looks good but with the existence of all the Avengers flicks, I can't help but be disappointed a bit with the X-movies. What was done with the Avengers saga is everything that the X-saga could've been and should've been
Overall I agree with you, but on the other hand, I still think X2 was as good as any comic movie I've seen, and First Class was also pretty great. Hopefully the X3s and Wolvie: Origins of the franchise are behind them.

I find the spontaneous surge in X-Men hate fascinating, as we have had 4 great movies, 1 ok movie, and 1 not so good movie. That's a pretty good record for me. It seems that hating the X-Men franchise has become quite popular with certain people only very recently. We started off well, as X1 and X2 were excellent movies (X2 being one of the Top 5 CBM's IMO). Sure X3 (which I really like) and XO:W weren't 100% what we were looking for, but since then we've had two great movies in X:FC and The Wolverine, both of which are really enjoyable movies to watch. The X-hate bandwagon seems to have come from nowehere?

people are probably tired of seeing the stories get raped

ARE they being "raped" though? No comic book movie has given a 100% faithful adaptation to a particular story arc from it's titular charcacter's comic book series. The closet thing we got was Watchmen, and people complained that that was too similar to the similar to the source material.

It seems if it's too similar, it's bad, if it's too different, then that's bad too?

I've been of the opinion lately that the X-Men films haven't aged well. Until recently, I remembered the first two fondly because, when they came out, the comic book adaptation as a genre wasn't dominating the movie market like it does now and the fact that we were even getting films with these characters (and especially films that were trying to be serious and a little grounded instead of being just popcorn) was an achievement in itself. Unfortunately, now that we've been treated to films that found a better balance between telling a decent story as well as respecting the source material enough to not seem ashamed of it, the X-Men films seem lesser to me. I rewatched them recently and found more things wrong with them than right. I'll always appreciate those movies for helping to kick-start a renewed interest in comic book adaptations, but in retrospect I think they're just poor adaptations which could have been so much better.

I wouldn't call these X-men movies great. They are good for a watch or two but then are forgettable.

I started reading comic books in 1977 and I had 2 favorites: Captain America (which represented potential) and X-Men (which represented reality). In the 20 years I collected the title I saw it got from its peak of Claremont/Byrne, to some pathetic, sales grabbing lows. While I appreciate the effort in the beginnings of the modern CBM, it always bugged me how the source material mattered so little to the creative team. There was already an extensive, overlapping and character intertwined story. X1 started off as a rehashing of Kitty Pryde's origin, and it started off with the swapping out of one character for another, jamming in the marquee characters. Its funny how often we hear that what works in the books doesn't work on screen, yet they took the most popular characters from book and shoved them to the forefront at the expense of other characters. Sadly, with the sheer talent they had in place they could have made any character great.
In retrospect, no one knew how to make a comic book movie and its been a learning process then came Marvel Studios. This isn't to say MS has been perfect, but what they do have over Fox, Sony, and even WB is a deep and sincere love of the characters and they make an effort to stay faithful to the stories. I feel with Singer and company, they want to tell the story they made, and use the characters to do it. While I can sit down and really enjoy the films, that pleasure is relegated to the same category as reading a "What If" issue. Someday the wave of superhero movie will become stale, and the other studios will move on and Marvel will still be plugging away and eventually get everything back in one place.

I think you're confusing a total dislike of Singer's current direction with DofP as hating the entire franchise. :dunno

I haven't noticed much different than the kinds of comments we saw before, but maybe I'm not paying attention to the same places you are. My own opinions haven't really changed much since Marvel Studios started up, as I think the X-Men movies still hold their own as being a pretty distinctive franchise. But sure, stuff like not always shying away from some of the fantastic suits is something I appreciate about Marvel Studios.

I would say X2 and First Class were very, very good as comic movies go. X1 was good. The Wolverine was OK. X3 and Origins were garbage.

Even back there I was blown away by the tone and score but not the plot and characters. Time goes, things getting worse...
