Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon

One thing I’m beginning to sense from Rebel Moon is that the lead character, Kora, will definitely not be a Mary Sue in the sense that she’s going to be heavily flawed. She’s ”a child of war” and there’s a meta commentary on what war does to damage the psyche of soldiers and civilians who are also casualties of it. So it looks like she’s going to be pretty messed up.
Also, she looks all muscle. Don't mean bulked up, but lean muscle e.g. not a twiggy 'lil girl that just stepped off the catwalk.
And in the trailer, doesn't she just finish someone off with a kill shot?

Yeah, it looks like she busts a cap into the head of one of the soldiers that was raping (?) her friend.

Looks like zack the Mac has faith in this since he confirmed the Snyderverse is over. (Something we all knew since 2017) but it’s good to see him finally burying rotting corpse finally. Hope this movie is good.

The only Zack Snyder films I've seen are his 2 zombie movies. The Dawn of the Dead remake was OK far as I remember. His Army of the Dead or whatever it was called, was dreadful.
This looks flashy and all but will it actually be any good? His more recent work I've seen sucked so I'm not particularly excited about this.

Ok, so the only 2 Snyder films you saw were 50/50 in terms of goodness, and the rest of the films (which you didn't actually see) really sucked?...

Re-read my comment.
"His more recent work I've seen sucked" in the context of the rest of my comment, clearly refers to his more recent zombie film that I did see. Also, notice "I've seen" within the sentence.
I haven't seen any of his other movies and so made no comment on them.
I'd also hardly call "ok far as I remember" a rousing endorsement.
The 2 Snyder films I've seen were 20 years apart there abouts. I'm using the most recent work from the director as the most likely indicator of his current quality. That being, his latest work (his latest work that I've seen, before you get upset) was terrible, therefore, I'm not particularly excited for this new work of his, which, yes, had a flashy trailer but I've no real reason to think it'll be any good.

*Shrug*. Ragtag group of fighters takes on the Big Bad. Sort of like the Expendables in space, with the lost-warrior-sick-of-war who just wants a simple life but is now really *&^% off. Happens to be female instead of Rambo.
Works for me. It's a story that's been working since Tolkien.

Except, yah know, when the execution is awful.

On the other hand, the forums are often at their best when a work that could have been better, is elegantly critiqued by the erudite, knowledgeable fans, deeply steeped in film history and *THE LORE*. Fans with mad skills and collective wisdom in weaponry, cinematography, literature, media, costumes, lighting effects - either way, looking forward to it. There's been commentary on the boards where I've laughed myself sick :monkey3 . So really, there's no downside.

Gotcha!... 😉

It’s Zack Snyder. Even if RM:CoF turned out to be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, fans split over his DC films won’t be joining hands and singing kumbaya. Heh, no way.

Rebel Moon got an advance screening to an audience on Dec. 1st at Brazil’s comic-com CCPX23 (side note: I guess this has now become the biggest comic-con in the world?). It got raves but we can assume that those who enjoy Snyder’s work will tend to hail it as great, that’s to be expected. We would see that also in SW and MCU, just sayin’. Like even if a movie is mid fanboys will still fanboy, etc.

This raises the point of how honest fans and haters can be… Not even “objective” because with art it’s not like people can just turn off all their biases. (They can’t!) I mean just being honest with themselves internally…

A fair example of this is AotD which didn’t really do much for me. I’m not really into the zombie apocalypse genre. Although I do think the story, acting, and cinematography for AotD are all fine. In any event, it’s one of my least favorite Snyder films. But that’s definitely not because I think it’s poorly directed. That sort of zombie apocalypse material just doesn’t strike a chord with me personally.

Anyway, I’ll be very curious to see what the critics say once A Child of Fire releases in theaters Dec. 15th. That’s going to be the first indication of whether Zack Snyder will be rehabilitated by the media, and get treated to a sort of “comeback kid” narrative which infotainment media traditionally digs.

If you want to start a post with "The only Zack Snyder films I've seen are his 2 zombie movies." obviously you can do that. Expecting anyone to think you have seen more of them isn't reasonable.

I don't really have any thoughts of zombie apocalypse as a genre and I still thought AotD was just okay and he has made some of my favourite movies.

Yeah, that more or less sums up how I feel too.

It's not like I have even a moderate dislike for the zombie apocalypse genre. I'm mostly neutral to it...

I did actually really like World War Z because it felt more grounded than most films of that type. But anyway, more broadly now that I think about it I've never been a horror genre fan in general. All the gore and whatnot. But I guess bottom line is making strong violence in movies artful is something that I do appreciate.

I thoroughly enjoyed World War Z. I think the only genre that is massively hit or miss for me is musicals. I don't like over-the-top gore, later Saw movies, Hostel etc

Not sure what you mean here.
I said I'd only seen 2 of his movies so could only judge him on those movies. The other poster misread my post. My second post explained this. I'm not expecting anyone to think ive seen more since I clearly said I hadn't seen many of his movies.
I've since looked him up on IMDB. I'm not surprised I've seen so little of his work as he seems to have mostly made comic book movies.

Nevermind. After a few re-reads, it makes sense now.

I appreciate how they behave pretty much like real human beings, i.e., that their body language and dialogue is grounded in that way.

I’m a Star Wars fan, but in recent years the dialogue and characterizations have all begun to strongly rely on the audience accepting that we’re inhabiting a mythic space that‘s pure fantasy. The dialogue in SW actually feels robotic and wooden now. And the entire psychological approach to the various characters as well. In contrast, Rebel Moon is moving the world into a “grittier,” i.e., more realistic feeling, sort of vibe to characters, story, and dialogue.

The frequent use of out-of-focus, blurry background is one of Zack’s big gambles here. I’m sure it is ultimately done to reduce the budget costs. For every background in every scene—in this type of film!— to be rendered in exquisite detail with CGI would obviously be much more expensive. I mean he’s swinging for the fences with “Star Wars and Lord of the Rings had a baby named Rebel Moon.” And it did cost $200M (or thereabouts).

With the blurriness for much of the background, there’s ways to do it artistically so that you get neat lighting effects. There’s a series of YT videos that Zack put out named “Snyder School” where he breaks down the techniques he uses.

I mean would I prefer that every single element be in focus? Yeah, admittedly I would. But that would be so expensive for a film like this that we’re talking about something on the order of an Avatar 2 budget where the film had to make $2B at the box office just to break even! 😂 And as we know this film is only getting a tiny theatrical release for one week. So Zack is trying to find a way for a film like this to be made for a streaming platform in a form that is still ultimately deeply satisfying.

I for one am super excited for this, 300 married with SW in an 80’s style fantasy romp bring it on!

I mean c’mon who wouldn’t want that.

Warts and all I appreciate that ZS exists.

This might be a Godzilla MO and surprise the hell out of everyone and be super entertaining.

If it fails to deliver then it fails to deliver and ZS can then finally fade away into obscurity and we will be left with some wonderful movies of his.

BUT…if it delivers the goods even at PG-13 and the R cut makes it even more thrilling THEN WATCH OUT my man is back on form.

Can you imagine a ZS Godzilla movie :horror :thud:
