The Hong Kong company I bought the figure from got back to me saying that the this Darth Vader helmet is "supposed to have that damage" and offered me some store credit.

To be honest it's ruined the figure for me. I'm really not that into the figure now as I know it's damaged. Kind of a bummer for what could have been a cool figure.

The thoughts of trying to buff it out and then making it worse is freaking me out.

Very clever of you. I'm looking on ebay now and I can only find the full helmet. Nobody selling the dome seperately unfortunately.
I consider myself very lucky..... Good Luck on your search!

Well the touch up job on 7 year old RO pleather didn't work as it peeled more when I tried to handle it.

Conclusion:
1)303 protectant does not work once pleather has deteriorated
2)touching up with acrylic paint is not the best idea as it makes surrounding areas crack more
3)When removing all the pleather the acrylic paint spots were hard to remove.
4)ALL pleather was deteriorated to the point where you could just remove it with slight rubbing, including the normally hidden parts that were never touched.
5)Probably not a good idea to get an old Vader release on ebay even if it's sealed in box.
6)These figures now seem kind of a scam even if they look nice initially.
7)Pose your Vader in neutral museum pose, put it on the shelf and never touch it again!
8)Don't use the crotch grabber, find a stand that grabs the figure by the waist
9)Apply the 303 protectant when the figure is new , but does it really change anything?
10)Boots and belts were still fine with no sign of deterioration.

Here's the body with all pleather removed. Will have to try the shoe polish method

I have seen more QC issues with this helmet than any other single piece other than later deterioration (pleather/rubber) issues.
I wasn't aware of anything wrong about this release until I saw a post on facebook the night before mine arrived.

A well known figure suplier company from the UK is sending back numerous helmets back to his supplier for replacements. Same issues with all, mostly scuffed helmets and a few broken tusks.

Surely Hot Toys have to be aware of this?

When I opened mine the first thing I checked were the tusks and helmet. Tusks were fine but the helmet was scuffed in a few places but mostly in the middle.

My supplier in Hong Kong said that the helmets are supposed to look scratched like that and wouldn't be offering a replacement part.

They did offer some store credit but did not say how much.

yeah, but I don't think the 303 protectant helped much in "fortifying" the old pleather. I got more peels just manipulating the figure again. So I guess I can't touch it anymore.
You could always look for a new set of pants on ebay

Sucks that it peeled off. I haven't had one peel that bad. Could also be your climate causing the issue. Give that shoe polish method a try. Probably the best bet is to wait and see if they ever do a nylon suit or leather suit version. 1/6 collecting isn't for the feint of heart

The thing is I probably wouldn't have noticed as it was on the shelf and looked fine. It's when you start handling it that you notice the pleather has become brittle and peels away with only slightest pressure.

You could try these from the new rotj. I "think" the RO is a bit larger, but I doubt much difference in the pants

They don't have the top that would work, though, so I guess ebay would be the only option there
