Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker
"Grail piece."
Yes, that's it exactly. I remember watching Tom at 10 and just-being-mesmerized! To think I have an autograph and a very well done figure as well? I'm quite a happy lad!
I have to be honest and say that I haven't been satisfied with any of the production photos that have been posted.
The head on this and 10 looks like a cheap knock off of that shown on the proto photos. In those, there were facial details, skins tones, and texture. Every production photo is featureless, flat and smooth.
Now, I'm no photographer, but my Joker head shots highlight all the features in the figure that were evident in the proto. I don't want to hear about BC not being able to meet HT standards, as this figure is costing twice as much in total for me, as my Joker Mime version. I expect a minimum of a similar standard, where I should could better . Thus far, I am not impressed.
Great post - so what do you suggest? You're in China, you know the country better than most or all people in this thread. The problem isn't the prototypes, the problem is the manufacturing of the HS's and possibly the painting. How could they improve their execution at a manufacturing level?
When I worked for a company that sent stuff over to China to be manufactured they also sent someone in the UK office - a tough sonuva***** - to stand over the factory during production runs. I'm guessing that's what BC need to do. We know they did it with 11 because they posted photos of the Production line - did they do it with 4 and 10? There's really no other way of ensuring you get what you asked for. But what do you think?
It's hard for me to comment on 4 as I never liked the expression, although I do think it captures something cartoony about Tom's character which I like. But 10 seems to have come out really well, although I worry about the grey wash and that I might get a paint job that's orange and grey. I can see its not Hot Toys quality, but for me its good enough - yes, I don' like paying that much, but no one else is going to make this figure. If they could make it better, I'd like them to, but I'm okay with this level of quality for 10, although that might change when I get it in hand.
Oh come on man... you're obviously disappointed - I hope when mine arrives I'm happy with how it turned out - but BCS is a boutique outfit. A better comparison between companies would probably be Iminime, surely. Their sets run around $400-500 and up.
I'm a Bruce Lee fan, and I'm a hell of a lot happier with this set (in pics at least) than I am with Enterbay's Big Boss figure. I was looking forward to that a lot and, for a MSRP of $230, they stuffed it. And Bruce Lee is supposed to be their flagship license.
Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker
The thing I don't get is how they can mess up relatively simple things like that weird facial hair shadow(which I don't remember ever seeing on the doc) or the weird scarf colors. Maybe they need an OCD Who fan in charge of these projects

I don't think it has so much to do with that but more to do with the fact that they got it as-close as they were able to get it with the materials used. And remember, hand painted prototypes are always superior to the final factory paints. I'd say they got it pretty close. Could have been disastrous like when we saw the tan skin tones in the early production sample photos so I'm happy.

I don't think color on the scarf would be that difficult to match and the shadow was totally unnecessary. Still, I'm pleased for the most part. I've ALWAYS wanted a 4th doc(hence my being picky) and he's about as close as we're going to get for a long time, I imagine

My DHL tracking's been stuck on "Processed in Gatwick" since Friday night. Should I not get my hopes up to recieve it today (Monday)? Or don't they track once it goes out the country?

Yes, I click buy I get moved to account page, and the page where you have to manage your shipping doesn't let me click continue at the bottom. I have sent them an e-mail that the site page isn't working, hopefully they respond in the next day or two.
So many sites on the web, we want to give them money...and they cannot take it...the cart doesn't work.
Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker
My feelings on this Tom Baker figure are this: I greatly
prefer the "tan" skin tones on the prototype to the finished
mass marketed result. I am pleased with how the body and
outfit look, though. I used fine grain sand paper to get rid of
that tacky 5 O'clock shadow on the face, and brought the skin
tones to more closely match that of the prototype.
Like all of you on here, I'm tremendously happy to finally
get a 1:6 Tom Baker figure! I started collecting figures in 1999,
so it's been close to 15 years since I knew I wanted one. Yes,
that's a long time! Am I happy with my Tom Baker 1:6 figure,
even though it has a few flaws? Yes! I've had it since Thursday,
December 12, and I find myself looking at it several times during
the course of a day, no matter how busy things get.
Part of me still finds it hard to believe I finally have this figure!
I'm much happier with the face since I changed it a bit. I guess
I'm in the minority here, but I prefer the tan look of the prototype
to the finished product. I feel that Big Chief is doing a really
good job of creating these Doctor figures, although they could
refine them a bit more. I don't expect perfection, as nothing is
perfect, but a bit better quality would be wonderful.
Still, I love what we got, flaws and all.
I'm now looking forward to 1:6 figures of Doctors 1, 3, and 9.
I have Big Chief's Doctor 11- love that one! And a cheaper
version of Doctor 10. I get what I can afford to buy. These
things get expensive, you know?
Doctor #4 was the first one I saw on TV back in 1979,
but it wasn't until November of 1983 ( 30 years ago now.)
that I seriously began to watch Doctor Who, starting with
Doctor #3 - Jon Pertwee. My partner at the time- George-
had seen I was very uptight while attempting a stint at
commercial art school- asked me to get in bed and relax
and watch Doctor Who with him. I'd seen part one of "The
Sontaran Experiment" on PBS back in '79 and hadn't been
particularly impressed.
" Get in bed, and we'll watch the episode, I know you'll love
it." The episode for that Saturday afternoon was "The Time
Monster." Within 10 minutes, I knew I liked it. Within a half
hour, I liked it a lot. At the show's conclusion, George asked
me how I liked it.
" Like it?? I loved it!" I exclaimed!
Loved Tom Baker's Doctor when he came along. He's my
sentimental favorite, as the episodes were fantastic! George
and I watched them all together. It was one more thing that
we could share together.
George died in an accident in 1998, shortly after the holidays.
We'd been together for over 17 years. I know our friendship
changed my life forever. He instilled in me a love for classical
music, gardening, flowers, cats, being able to build furniture
from kits or from scratch, and of course my passion for all things
Doctor Who. Yes- I saw Day of The Doctor. Loved it!
I cried a bit at the end as many of us did at An Adventure
in Space and Time. Loved that show, too.
John Hurt would have made a superb 12th Doctor, though I liked
him lots as "The War Doctor."
I have many episodes on DVD- some Hartnell, a lot of Pertwee,
Most of Tom Baker's- ( Love his first 5 seasons best!) I also
did a painting of him as The Doctor, and I drew my own Doctor
Who comics back in the 1980's, and I have a few Doctor Who
shirts, too. I have a couple of Tardis's, one being about 7 inches
tall, the other, 10 inches high.
I have all of Doctor 9 and 10 episodes on DVD, and need to get
series 7 part 2, which I will do soon.
You might say I'm a big fan....
