Boba Fett Gets New Armor Before The War of the Bounty Hunters​

In the prelude to Star Wars' new War for the Bounty Hunters crossover event, Boba Fett shows off his armor's new look for an arena battle.

Marvel Comics' Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters event is about to begin, and the prelude issue sees the legendary Boba Fett sporting an all-new look for the occasion. Apparently, the cleaned-up paint job Fett gave his armor in The Mandalorian wasn't the first time he restyled his beskar. This latest issue sees Fett's new style being used as a means to go undercover and conceal his identity (as much as any Mandalorian can with their iconic armor).

In between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett was en route to deliver an encased-in-carbonite Han Solo, but his trip from Cloud City to Jabba the Hutt's palace on Tatooine was not a straight shot. While Ethan Sacks' Bounty Hunters series saw Fett embarking on a personal vendetta before collecting his payment from Jabba, the bounty hunter now has to deal with the deteriorating condition of Han Solo's carbonite prison, which threatens to kill the infamous smuggler. It all unfolds in War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha #1 from writer Charles Soule and artist Steve McNiven.

Fett's predicament with Solo forces the bounty hunter to make a stop on the Smuggler's Moon of Nar Shaddaa to see a specialist. However, in the absence of credits, Fett has no choice but to instead agree to fight and kill the warrior known as Wyrmen Lictor, a pit fighter belonging the the Kanji Hutt Clan. Not wanting to get on the clan's bad side, Fett decides to augment his armor, painting it all black and taking the name of his father to enter the arena, winning all his fights until he's pitted against Wyrmen, a vicious warrior resembling a monstrous spider.

Clearly, Boba Fett is finding no joy in what he has to do to keep his bounty alive, which is evidenced by his thoughts of his father's death in a similar arena seen in Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Clones. Regardless, he's no less formidable in his new black armor, and the crowds soon fall in love with "Jango," calling him the Beskar Brawler and Mando Maniac. After he epically used his own jetback to blow up Wyrmen and had an uneasy interaction with the displeased Kanjis, Boba headed back to Solo with his armor restored to its normal color scheme.

While Boba Fett's black armor was short-lived, it's remarkable how striking and dynamic it was in this new iteration. Even in the Star Wars galaxy, it just goes to show that black will always be trending as a cool style. However, it certainly looks as though Boba now has bigger problems on his hands, especially considering that Solo was stolen while he was fighting. The War of the Bounty Hunters has officially begun, and it's going to be really interesting to see how Boba Fett gets his prize back in future issues of the crossover event from Marvel Comics.

One prominent detail should be noted that this figure is categorized under completely new format - CMS or Comic Masterpiece Series. It is paving the way for future StarWars comic releases ?

They may have been. I don’t keep up with Marvel much anymore. I just meant it’s interesting that they’re delving into the Star Wars comic book universe now.

Yep I find myself in the same boat. I'll probably pass, but the black suit Iron Ma....I mean Boba Fett was always a cool option.

Actually the black suit was something many were wishing for leading up to some TV show.....

Because it has nothing to do with the TV show, plus he still looks cool which was the entire reason he was a popular character in the first place.

The Comic Masterpiece line has been around since 2010, with the first figure being Friend from the 20th Century Boys manga as part of their 10th anniversary lineup.

Fully understandable why the origins of the CMS line have been lost to time since the first manga based figures were a bit more obscure for western audiences. There was also a pretty big 7 year gap between CMS04 Cloud and CMS06 Zombie Deadpool announcements.

But I remember these were being produced when I first started collecting Hot Toys in 2011. I’m originally from Japan so I thought the manga figure concept was pretty cool. I was interested to see who else they’d make, but they didn’t make any more.

There are plenty of Star Wars comic characters that I’d absolutely love to see as 1:6 figures, but this is unfortunately not a new product line they’re starting specifically for that. Odds of more are likely still low, aside from possibly more repaints in the future.

These are all the CMS figures. War Machine is CMS13 but they skipped a few numbers.
