Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)
Not quite the same as each of those. Other than Batman Returns we weren't looking at prototypes of those figures for 2 years before we were even able to order them. Full specs and pics appeared out of the blue and preorders followed in the usual short timeframe after that. With Ripley the effect is that by time it eventually went up for order we've gotten so used to the figure that it feels like it isn't new, like we already own it.
Of course many of those figures felt underwhelming because...well they were for one reason or another. Batman Returns ended up having the same crappy Wayne headsculpt as the prototype, the same stupid mouth-pieces, leg posing was even more limited than the DX09 and there was QC issues. John Matrix went from a reasonable Arnie likeness in the prototype to sweet **** all likeness on the final figure and Police Shootout T-800 never really had a great likeness plus had the major disappointment of the head/body proportions screw-up; the only way that figure didn't disappoint was if it was your very first Terminator figure and you had no frame of reference to compare it against.
Marty McFly was great though. I had no complaints about that figure. I simply realised it was a mistake for me to buy into a line for a movie that I had never before owned toys from.
Yup, Returns Batman, John Matrix, Arkham Batman, Marty McFly and Police Shootout T-800.
It's like that's it, that's the best you have to show for all those years of development and anticipation? They really feel "obligatory" like they're just thrown out there last minute to shut people up.
