Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

She's practically 6 foot tall. With the average man being 5'10", she is going to be taller than many men.

Hot toys sure has come a long way since the original was released back in the early 2000's. The original Looks about as much like ellen ripley as it does charlie sheen. We're complaining about minor flaws with the new figure but its amazing to think people actually thought the original was a good figure. Its quite laughable now though..

Yes, much improved, but at a cost.

Back then the sculpts were bad on purpose as they didn't want to get sued after not bothering to acquire likeness rights. Also it is important to remember back then they only cost 1/3rd of what they do now. They really were great for what they were back then.

Today they actually acquire likenesses and the quality/fit/finish/paint are better, but we literally pay for every ounce of improvement.

Back then Hottoys figures are 65-110 us$.
But I don't think the sculpts were bad on purpose. All Hottoys figs used to look like that until they acquired Yulli as a sculptor for Pirates of the Caribbean 3 figures. That's the start of their glorious journey from a company who sell 1/6 doll toys from movies to premium action figure these days.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

What was the first figure they actually had actor likeness rights for?

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

The Aliens figures were bad likenesses on purpose. HT had the license from 20th Century Fox to make "model kits" (which is why they came unassembled) based on the characters in Aliens. When Aliens was made, it was not standard that the actor's likeness was included in the licensing contracts like it is now, so HT would have had to get a separate license from each individual actor in order to make accurate sculpts of the actors. Add on top of this the state of the art for headsculpts at the time these figures were released and you get the figures we got. Sculpts and old bodies aside, most of the rest of the Aliens figures still hold up today, in my opinion. Could they be done better with modern techniques? Sure, but they would also cost 3x what they did back then.

I remember when I preordered mine, I missed out on Hicks and Apone as I think they came out first IIRC. I do remember getting on a wait list for Hicks which never materialized, but did manage to snag Ripley and Hudson at least. Sure I wasn't overly wowed with the head sculpts but ****, I was just glad that they were made! Hopefully if the new ones do well that will pave the way for others, maybe not ALL of the marines but several others. I think a 1/6 Bishop would be cool to have personally, not to mention a better 'Aliens' ripley

not Sheen.
slikkerias found out that early HT made decent (for those times) likeness of actors but then hid them with beards, paint, mustaches - or putting heads on wrong characters.
and he posted a picture where it looked definitely like Lambert actor but in another role.

And cheap costing! No point looking back and judging on today's standards without realizing yesterday's advantages.
Just because evolution has occurred as it is supposed to after 10 years doesn't make the trail blazers 'bad' items.

Its like when people bash the McFarlane stuff. When it was new, there was NOTHING else like it on the market, and they cost nearly half what NECA figures costs today. I know I'm beginning to sound like an old man...but respect the trail blazers you whipper-snappers!:lol

I used it to make a custom Lambert. Not perfect likeness, but Pretty close I think.

oh i'm not knocking it, i'm aware its a product of its time, but since the figures have jumped so much in quality it just makes the product look that much more awful lol.

i remember when mcfarlane first hit toystores, those figures were amazing looking when i was a kid.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I wonder though if HT looks at what neca is doing with their Aliens line and wants a more expensive piece of the pie and will then go after the likeness rights of the marines.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Waiting to order this but I definitely want Ripley in the collection.
