The thing is, though, that I have absolutely no problem with this sculpt. If another sculptor board member posted this pic and offered just the painted sculpt for $160 plus shipping he'd have more work than he can handle.

Agreed. I see so many people gush over custom sculpts I think look like crap just because they're custom seemingly. Hot Toys aren't always perfect but I think they take more flak than they deserve.

Yeah, everyone seems to think "custom" automatically equals perfect. If that was offered as a custom sculpt it would be called the best Yoda ever.

Um... that's absurd. :lol

People aren't idiots - nobody hands over up to $100 for a raw sculpt then another $100-300 to get it painted simply because they prefer the custom over a commercially produced sculpt. That's nutso thinking.

And nobody associates custom sculpts with "perfect." :cuckoo: People buy it if it works or brings something new, or they don't if it doesn't.

There really needs to be a sub-thread opened for every HT release these days - one where no negative talk about the product will be allowed whatsoever.:dunno

Nah, people are just more constructive in the customs section because the people who actually are making that stuff don't have regular commissions from a company like Hot Toys, and are more likely to take negativity to heart. The customs section sees some of the craziest OCD in the hobby.

HT are an easier target because on here, they're essentially faceless, unless you're posting Howard memes. :lol

I don't think they should take no criticism but by and large I don't think most of their output is as bad as some people like to make you believe. They have figures that they really knock out of the park and some that fall short. I personally don't see a lot of really bad figures put out by them. They seem like an easy target because they're a bigger company and to some people it seems to be the mentality that because it's mass produced its not as good whereas if it's a customized or smaller company it's better for whatever reason.

I have no brand loyalty whatsoever (I constantly dump on SSC for their stupid-high prices and awful apps,) but let's be clear - we are firmly in the era of "Eh, I'll wait for HT." Where there's a sense that simply because it's HT, it rules (and SSC or any other company could never possibly even come close) - whether the HT fig in fact has a good likeness or is accurate - or not. So it's the reverse of what you're saying.

Surprisingly, HT's SW line has been a little underwhelming in terms of likeness. Lots of deep sculpt detail, ultra-real apps - yes. But likeness - not so much. This is Star Wars - there have been "sort of accurate" versions of these characters in 1/6 for nearly 20 years. We don't need another Ben that looks like a generic old man with a white beard. For $220.

Yes, Leia's sculpt/paint was knocked out of the park. Parts of Chewy and stormie were knocked out of the park (not the heads). The Vader helmet with a lot of mods can look excellent. But fair amount of the line is neither knocked out of the park nor "fall short" figs (by which I assume you mean a "miss.") Somewhere in the middle. Not "nailed." A surprising - for HT - number of mistakes, inaccuracies, and middling likeness.

This Yoda is middling to decent. Sculpt detail and apps are and will be gorgeous. Outfit looks average (compared to others) Likeness to ESB Yoda? Decent, I like it - though it's jowly, eyes are small and head a bit bulbous.

The fact we have another thread titled "which is the best Yoda?" after the HT full reveal says this is probably not the home run it should have been - coming from Hot Toys as it is, and costing $200.

And the "mentality that because it's mass produced its not as good whereas if it's a customized or smaller company it's better for whatever reason"? You are seriously saying that people say "blah" to a HT figure and go with a custom or small company's figure even if it's inferior to the HT fig?

This is just your opinion though and that of a small amount of collectors. There are fans such as myself that don't look over costumes with a fine toothcomb. Does HT Vader look like Vader to me and any normal person? Of course it does. Modding a $300 figure because the helmet is not an exact replica at 1/6 the scale is highly **** imo.

Exacting standards. I guess Hasbro nailed it too, right?:lol

imo, if you ask for $300... then expect a fine toothed comb and a 25oz can of ****.

But hey, that's just my opinion of $300 though.:dunno

I saw in the description that this Yoda is 130 mm tall. And Sideshow Yoda was 140 mm tall.

So I wondered if this difference would be noticeable.

I personally think Yoda was tiny, so I like the idea of a tad smaller Yoda. I did a little photoshop trying to keep the scales.

To me they seem pretty much around the same size. It may be that Hot Toys body has a more curved back, having a more noticeable hump maybe. With Sideshow Yoda, I found myself having to work out a better pose and futzing to achieve the more noticeable hump.

I also tried to put some other figures to compare the scale.

Great job!!!

I personally think the sculpt could be better, but as always with HT, I'm sure once it's in hand it'll be widely regarded as the best 1/6 Yoda.

Side by side, the SSC is feeling dated and second-rate - particularly in the eyes.

Looks pretty good to me. I don't think it blows away the Sideshow OT and PT versions by any means, but it's not worse than those either. It's another good offering of the character. The addition of the concentrating/force using head is exactly what I would have chosen to include with this figure, so props for that. This is literally what I had in my head when Jack said that Hot Toys was doing a Yoda last year. Dunno what more people could want (though, I'd have added strands of "real" white hair) and maybe a less zonked out expression. Eh, maybe moveable eyes too. :lol

Only thing I really don't like are his clothes, but that's tough for a character of this size. I won't be buying any of their Star Wars stuff, but I love that they're finally venturing into Empire and Jedi. Rather see this than another trooper variant or more Force Awakens crap from them. Yoda is classic.

What I really want to see is their Emperor and Jedi Luke, those will be exciting.

yes I agree that the biggest difference of the Sideshow vs. Hot Toys comparison is in the eyes and paint.

Hot Toys will make a significant leap in those aspects.

Sculptwise, each one has pros and cons.
