Hi dudes.
I have this figure still in its box. I intend to begin to work on it soon, and would like to gather as much info about it as possible.
This thread is enormous, so I must ask those of you who have been following since the beginning, whether there is a set of tips/tricks/issues/fixes that the community has agreed upon since the figure has been available.
To begin with, this figure's head... heck... I don't like it. Is there anything available to substitute it, that's worth the effort??
Thanks for your help guys!
Regards,
m.
I left mine stock. No mods. I like it just the way it is. I’ve had Sideshows version and Medicom UU version and I like the HT best.
Somethings like the boot/leg wrappings I liked better on sideshow because it seemed more realistic than plastic but I’m ok with these. You’d think with all the effort HT has put into leather boots for almost every figure they would have done something a bit more real for Luke.
Hm, you could always use one of the Sideshow heads (Luke X-wing/Snowspeeder pilot). I've had mine displayed since it first came out with the hat/poncho look. Personally don't have an issue with the head at all; but those two Sideshow heads are your best bet for an alternate Luke sculpt. I'd say the new Jedi one (hands down the best Mark Hamill likeness), but Hamill just looks soooo much older in ROTJ.
As far as heads go there are alternatives out there as chalor has stated. IMO Sideshow’s ANH just isn’t good enough to stand with other HT figures. For several reasons.
SS ANH Version
1) Poor sculpt
2) Older subpar paint job according to today’s standards.
3) Oversized compared to HT and other companies.
SS Yavin Luke
This was probably the worst Luke sculpt of any company in 1/6 scale. I’m pretty sure everyone agreed that unanimously hands down.
1) Poor sculpt
2) Poor paint job
3) Oversized
ANH Stormtrooper Luke
This one is arguably the best Luke sculpt sideshow put out and was thought of that way for years. There are still issues with this sculpt.
1) Oversized
2) Expression is odd bloated like he’s straining to take a dump
Medicom UU Luke
This one was an odd bird. Everyone said it looked like Jody Foster. From some angles it did look good and the hair sculpt was probably the best so far but it was very thin and Mark had a bit wider face so it didn’t quite hit the “Mark”. Paint apps were better than previous incarnations. I thought it was better than the two previous versions but that is subjective.
1) Too thin
2) Jody Foster look a like.
SS X-wing Luke
Everyone had faith that this was going to be the best Luke ever but it still fell short. They finally got the size right so it is an improvement. It is a nice sculpt and with the proper repaint (expensive) it could be great.
1) Paint apps were not up to modern standards
2) Sculpt and hair were a bit cartoony.
Then there is JNIX custom sculpt. A very good attempt by an amazing board sculptor who has given us his gifts to the community for several years now. Many people argue about whether this is an accurate likeness and from some angles they would be right and from others very wrong. It had a decent paint job but in my opinion still didn’t quite capture what I wanted so rather than spend extra money on several sculpts for all my Luke figures I just left them as is.
1) jaw and nose too far forward
2) looked like a shot of the transformation scene from American Werewolf in London.
3) blank open mouth expression
Many people have used combinations of elements from some of these products to get a proper Luke. Some were good and others not so much.
HT Head SSXWING hair Sculpt
DX Bespin Luke with Medi UU hair
Of course you could use any number of other Luke sculpts for the ANH look but the rest are molded more towards “post accident” older Hamill and look a bit odd on the ANH outfit.
It all boils down to what you like.
