That head looks good. Would be interested to see one of the top painters work on it, but really it could use some added detail in the sculpt itself.

I think the face is fine, just needs a good painter, the hair is a little lacking, its the right shape, just the finer detail is not there, though it could be painted to appear that it is.

Hum.....
Sideshow head sculpts..... Particularly those 2 figures... Not my cup of tea.

And Jedi Luke by HT is also a difficult choice for me. It is not the best HT could have produced. It is almost irritating to me, after showing off their mastery with Hoth Leia (even if she was also flawed with such an inexpressive look).

If at least some Chinese sculptor made the Space Tracker equivalent of Luke...... That ST was a hell of a sculpt, even if too big...!

Any alternatives, anyone else?

Regards,
m.

Hm, you could always use one of the Sideshow heads (Luke X-wing/Snowspeeder pilot). I've had mine displayed since it first came out with the hat/poncho look. Personally don't have an issue with the head at all; but those two Sideshow heads are your best bet for an alternate Luke sculpt. I'd say the new Jedi one (hands down the best Mark Hamill likeness), but Hamill just looks soooo much older in ROTJ.

Did you see all the pics I posted?

Yeah that was an incredible run down, thanks.

That unpainted sculpt looks ok, but like the space trucker, I really can't be bothered with oversized heads. I'd rather have it look slightly off than have a giant head on there.

Thank you. I was trying to be helpful to asguardianboy but I’m not sure if he even scrolled through the last couple pages to see what I posted.

You are damn right, as far as I am concerned.
I think the problem is the eyes. Too small.
But there are no alternatives. You can't even use Bespin Luke. Not with that necked body. And with that outfit, you can't do without the necked body.

I cannot stand the stock head, the promo shots were good, but i have never been so shocked when I opened it to see what we got.

Its all well and good finding that right angle, the right light and then...oh yeah that looks like him, it should look like him without all that.

I took the head and showed the Mrs, asked her who she thought it was, she had no idea, her guess was a young Tom Cruise but even that was a wild guess.

When I put the head on the body, she said no way is that Mark.

The best sculpt that looks like him is one I have in pic, its a little too big and needs painted well.

He might just have one of these faces thats hard to get right.

You are right about the gaiters. I'll try to change them for real cloth.
Thanks for your thorough head survey.
Unfortunately, I can't consider any of those options, which seem to me worse than the stock head sculpt.

I left mine stock. No mods. I like it just the way it is. I’ve had Sideshows version and Medicom UU version and I like the HT best.

Somethings like the boot/leg wrappings I liked better on sideshow because it seemed more realistic than plastic but I’m ok with these. You’d think with all the effort HT has put into leather boots for almost every figure they would have done something a bit more real for Luke.

As far as heads go there are alternatives out there as chalor has stated. IMO Sideshow’s ANH just isn’t good enough to stand with other HT figures. For several reasons.

SS ANH Version
1) Poor sculpt
2) Older subpar paint job according to today’s standards.
3) Oversized compared to HT and other companies.

SS Yavin Luke
This was probably the worst Luke sculpt of any company in 1/6 scale. I’m pretty sure everyone agreed that unanimously hands down.
1) Poor sculpt
2) Poor paint job
3) Oversized

ANH Stormtrooper Luke
This one is arguably the best Luke sculpt sideshow put out and was thought of that way for years. There are still issues with this sculpt.
1) Oversized
2) Expression is odd bloated like he’s straining to take a dump

Medicom UU Luke
This one was an odd bird. Everyone said it looked like Jody Foster. From some angles it did look good and the hair sculpt was probably the best so far but it was very thin and Mark had a bit wider face so it didn’t quite hit the “Mark”. Paint apps were better than previous incarnations. I thought it was better than the two previous versions but that is subjective.
1) Too thin
2) Jody Foster look a like.

SS X-wing Luke
Everyone had faith that this was going to be the best Luke ever but it still fell short. They finally got the size right so it is an improvement. It is a nice sculpt and with the proper repaint (expensive) it could be great.
1) Paint apps were not up to modern standards
2) Sculpt and hair were a bit cartoony.

Then there is JNIX custom sculpt. A very good attempt by an amazing board sculptor who has given us his gifts to the community for several years now. Many people argue about whether this is an accurate likeness and from some angles they would be right and from others very wrong. It had a decent paint job but in my opinion still didn’t quite capture what I wanted so rather than spend extra money on several sculpts for all my Luke figures I just left them as is.
1) jaw and nose too far forward
2) looked like a shot of the transformation scene from American Werewolf in London.
3) blank open mouth expression

Many people have used combinations of elements from some of these products to get a proper Luke. Some were good and others not so much.

DX Bespin Luke with Medi UU hair

Of course you could use any number of other Luke sculpts for the ANH look but the rest are molded more towards “post accident” older Hamill and look a bit odd on the ANH outfit.

It all boils down to what you like.

I think the ROTJ is the closest we’ve gotten for young Luke, and TLJ is maybe the closest overall. With the X-wing helmet on ANH Luke looks great from either HT or SS. And the snowspeeder one looks good too.

Still the worst offender for the Hot Toys OT sculpts is Old Ben (or maybe Farmboy Luke with hair).

"With the helmet on" is like saying she looks good with a bag over her face.

:rotfl It does though. I think the hair is the biggest issue with having realism, so the helmet helps the sculpt look more realistic anyhow.

The hair looks different in every other scene for Luke in Star Wars, and it seemed to change how is face is perceived. The one exception I think is ROTJ, where it does look a bit more uniform throughout.

There is no good Luke Skywalker head sculpt. They are all crap.

If not, show me a good one.

Agreed. Though I think DX07 is on par with RotJ in terms of likeness for each respective film. Can’t really say one is better than the other.
