So what exactly killed porkins? Did his his x-wing get hit? And why did biggs tell him to eject? Its not like those helmets were sealed with oxygen in mind. :dunno

I think he got shot, maybe the cockpit can be separated from the rest of the ship or something. :huh

Anyone here an X-wing X-pert? :lol

Per wookepedia:

Porkins flew as Red Six during the Battle of Yavin, his skills at strafing aiding the Rebels early in the battle. However, when his T-65 X-wing starfighter was struck by debris, leaving him with several mechanical and computer malfunctions, Porkins was hit by enemy turbolaser fire and killed.

I sort of wondered if maybe the cockpit is somehow able to detach from the rest of the ship or something too. It is weird otherwise for Biggs to tell him to eject as he'd die either way.

I always assumed that the "magnetic field" the X-Wings passed through on approach to the Death Star provided a breathable atmosphere of sorts. Which is why the heroes could run up the ramp of the captured Falcon and then seemingly take off into open space.

Biggs probably just blurted out the "eject" thing in a split second desperate attempt to keep his friend alive at least a little longer without really analyzing the feasibility of a rescue team somehow retrieving him from the surface of the Death Star.

It's been explained differently in a few different mediums: A mag-con field that is generated around the pilot to store some oxygen while they await rescue, or a seal that is integrated into the box on their chest that pops up when activated and has oxygen provided through the hose seen on their suits, or as seen in the comics, it's a separate piece that is affixed:

Basically, whatever method that can be devised around the clear plot hole that the film presented. :wink1:

I wonder if they'll explain it in Rogue One.

It will be fixed in the Extreme Super Ultimate Jedi Edition release of the movie on Blu-Ray only. They'll probably just replace the actor for Porkins completely with a new species of cat person. :rotfl
