Yeah. There's no reality where I was going to skip this figure.

Normally it's a must for me that a character representation also represents their best corresponding film. I would never for example grab an arnie from Terminator Genisys. I would only consider T1 & T2 for the collection.

But it's a peculiar case with Jack..

Perhaps it's the way the character transcends the films. He's a separable element. He's bigger. He's the constant even through the weakest installments.

It helps that non of his appearances feel distinctly offshoot, but on course with his natural evolution.

Ideally, I would have preferred a figure from the first or second film. But as such, this figure doesn't feel out of place for me as a representation for the character, or the franchise at large.

I feel exactly the same. Would I prefer COTBP? Absolutely as that’s the best of the franchise and I also want a representation from my favourite of the franchise.

But this will serve as a stand-alone representation of Sparrow for me for now, until HT hopefully do a COTBP version.

I do plan on stripping down a lot of the bulk and trinkets and also going to try and make the artisan hair and dreadlocks a little darker however.

It speaks to Depp's talent and ability to craft a character that transcends the universe and films it's a part of. He's the one who curated the outfit, the trinkets, the rings. He turned what was meant to be a side character in TCoBP into the face of the franchise.

As far his outfit I kind of dig how it has evolved across the films, Depp kept bringing and wanting to add new things to the look, each with a meaning of it's own. Almost every single thing you see on his person isn't something the studio wanted but something Depp himself personally wanted to add to the character. So the DMTNT look, while probably belonging to the worst film of the franchise, is the most complete and encapsulates all of Jack's journeys.

I remember playing a videogame. I think it was adapted from the second film. But nothing I can find sparks any memory.

Granted, I wouldn't have been 10 at the time..
They've made a bunch of PoTC video games, I mostly recall the PS3 game adaption of At World's End, Pirates of The Caribbean Online and the LEGO game of the first 3 films and the 4th one. I really enjoyed playing the last two back in the day, the LEGO game was very charming and even had Depp "voicing" the minifigure version of Jack.

I know for most this might night seem a big enough difference from DX15, but the tailoring alone is quite an improvement imo. The baldric (chest belt) on this is way more accurate and the real leather waist belts are also much preferred. Even the crocodile/alligator belt is more accurate than the DX15. Also, something I find interesting on this one versus DX06 and DX15 is that they screen printed the buttons on the vest this time instead of real, hand sewn buttons.

EDIT: just so I don’t have to write it all over again. Here are some posts I made for what’s different/upgraded from the previous versions.

I really like this pic. Bandana looks fine here.

1/3 statue in full captain’s gear if their silhouette is anything to go by

Are you sure it’s COTBP? The signage didn’t say so. Only says “Pirates of the Caribbean” but no subtitle to specifically say which version they’re doing unless I missed the info from somewhere. If you heard it was COTBP, was it a reliable source if not direct from JND?

Depends on how accurate you want it. You can make it resemble just by stripping it down but it won’t give you the look.

Just about nothing was saved from COTBP b/c they didn’t intend on having an sequel.

His belts, buckles, hat, vest, and pants are all the most different. Sash is meant to hang much longer as well but it was made from the same fabric that they luckily found again when beginning production on DMC and AWE.

He also doesn’t have the tattoos on his knuckles in the earlier films nor the X scar on his cheek.

DMTNT is also the only film where he has the extra fabric wrap around his right hand

No rings on his left hand in COTBP. He had a black spot on his left hand between his thumb and pointer finger.

The “piece of eight” is different after AWE. Even the bandana pattern is different from COTBP compared to the other films.

His hair is also different. More straight hair and less dreads in COTBP. Less trinkets. And also his hair was almost black versus the brown it became in later films.

You’d honestly have a bit better luck trying to transform this into anything but COTBP.

EDIT: Here’s a bit more in depth post I made previously about the differences.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed that the buttons are printed on the vest and the cutlass is no longer die-cast but they're really minor things that don't detract from the overall look of the figure. One thing the printed buttons do a good job of showing, is how Hot Toys could use the same method to create all the sea life, barnacles and shells on a new Davy Jones with actual clothing.

I'm also thinking about hunting down the Medicom hat or the Hot Toys AWE since that looks more like the hat they used in OST and DMTNT.

A lot of people are happy with having Jack as the stand alone representation of the franchise in their collection but Jones is such an iconic villain for me that it would be like having Batman without the Joker.

The screengrab bellow shows the Beast Kingdom DMTNT Jack and a Davy Jones that's not licensed after a specific film, only the franchise. Having Hot Toys Jack at the helm of the Pearl on one side and Jones at the helm of the Dutchman on the other would honestly be a dream come true but I doubt we'll ever see that happen.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but unless you got the Artisan there isn't really much reason to sell DX15.

I still currently feel the DX15 has better sculpts that might change when I see it in hand.

Looking forward to seeing that

That's a nice way of putting it. You could say this is the Jack of all trades, considering Depp made him his own.

Third party companies have come a long way. A third party Davy Jones could be worth a shot.

There's that one company that did the Edward Scissorhands figure...

Maybe LIM can do it, lol

The cutlass still looks like metal to me it's about the same as the Dx15. The buttons not being real sown on buttons on his vest is actually better imo this time only because you can now put the main pistol on his waist over the sash. It was difficult putting all the smaller weapons accessories on the Dx15 because the buttons got in the way and you didn't want to tare the stitch holding it.

Well put, @Scout Trooper. I wholeheartedly agree, more or less. I gather most feel the same way too.

I think what personally helps me as well is that I’ve always planned for Jack to be a standalone piece. It doesn’t seem like HT will make a original trilogy version anytime soon, but if they do, it’s simple, I’d just upgrade. No harm done.

I’m pretty excited to get this in hand, to finally have Jack in the collection.

What happened to HyperDrive 2.0? I was going to use this GIF

In the Figure Hideout’s video that was posted, he mentioned some points I found interesting:

- there is a reduction in bulkiness compared to the dx15 which creates a closer fit
- more patterns on the cloth bandana compared to sculpted one
- additional decorations on the rotted versions hair that aren’t included on the sculpted

Overall, I’m really happy with how this turned out after seeing the review compared to the blogger pics. I love all the accessories included like the oil lamp and treasure chest. The base is one of the best they’ve done as well. I was concerned with how the rooted hair would turn out considerably hot toys track record with hair before Artisan, but I’m glad I went with that version ultimately.

I caught that too.. not a big fan of the omission of detail with the Deluxe there.

I also have both Artisan and Deluxe on PO. But I was intending to use the Artisan Jack as a trade piece.

I’m unfamiliar with sideshow (where I have mine ordered) -will I just get an email also advising me of the same?
You should be, but you also don’t have to do anything. They’ll charge the card you have on file when the time comes. This is more or less to let you know it’s coming, and to update any information on your order (address, credit card, shipping provider) before they do charge you

I noticed the Artisan hairpiece was more detailed and had more trinkets in it in the promotional shots but didn't really feel like I was missing out on much just getting the deluxe but the pictures you posted definitely sting. There's considerably less detail and way less trinkets on the braids in the sculpted version. The cloth bandana obviously looks more realistic as well, even if it's bulky. I wish Hot Toys had managed to apply the cloth bandana and trinkets on the sculpted version as well but I guess once you have him set up with the helm and all the stuff on him, you won't really notice the absence of such small things.
