Re: 1/6th Scale Sideshow TaunTaun

Hasbro wouldn't DARE do that much research. Their tauntaun was gray with a lighter underbelly- which would reflect the life-size prop. I really like the Cowen & Davidson replica; it's extremely close to the original seen below, although they did make the horns too thick. Tippett's horns are thinner and pointier.

Pictures like this make me very, very happy.

Tippett was the George Harrison to McQuarrie and Johnston's Lennon and McCartney.

Is Lucas the Ringo?
Lucas isn't COOL enough to be Ringo... Lucas = Phil Spector... But now that begs the question: Who would be analogous to Dennis Muren?... Frank Zappa?

I'm sure Phil Tippett had more skill and more funding to work with than Cowen & Davidson, and he didn't have to produce them in numbers. I give credit where due; I think they did a nice job. Not perfect, but neither is the Sideshow version.

There's that, but the differences I mentioned only come down to lack of attention to detail or not caring to notice. Clearly they have the necessary talent. Tippett is one talented guy, but if you think there aren't people on this and other forums with equal or greater talent... Well.

Re: 1/6th Scale Sideshow TaunTaun

I didn't imply that. It boils down to this: The C&D puppet replica is appealing to some, so they can buy it and enjoy it, and even modify it if they have the ability. (or make their own.) That applies to the Sideshow version as well. Both versions could be much better, and If they're not good enough for those with a very discerning eye, people don't need to buy them. I applaud the efforts for both versions; even poorly done items can help future efforts to be better.

Re: 1/6th Scale Sideshow TaunTaun

Since the SS Tauntaun seems intended to resemble the life-size prop, I've been looking for ways to make it more accurate.
I noticed there are two bony projections missing on both sides of the head, just below the ears. I'll add them, then repaint.
The knees should have sparse hair growth, exposing warty skin areas. I'll do a complete body repaint at some point.
Right now it looks too much like a simple gray undercoat with white highlights... not much depth and variation to it.
The stock paint on the head looks much better, though it's not film-accurate either.
I'll repaint the whole piece eventually and post before-and-after pics.

I don't remember that big red oval from the last time I saw the movie. The arrow was definitely there, but I think it was on the other side of the head. ;)

Scuffed up knees... Hmm, somewhere there's another Tauntaun with a big smile on its mug.

Re: 1/6th Scale Sideshow TaunTaun

If HT could convincingly fur a fully articulated wide release Chewy, you'd think furring a somewhat low edition size Taun statue would have been possible. That Tippet replica shows that it could have been really cool.

Re: 1/6th Scale Sideshow TaunTaun

Speaking of ovals, I just found a film-accurate detail on the HASBRO 1/6th Tauntaun that the Sideshow version is missing. Difficult to fathom, but true. In the film, the life-size prop had two saddle straps under the belly; the strap closest to the crotch area had ovals sewn into the leather, with a cross-hatching pattern inside each oval. The Hasbro Tauntaun got this right, but not the Sideshow... Shocking.

Re: 1/6th Scale Sideshow TaunTaun (in development)

So for anyone that owns this... will the figure fit in a space that is 16x12. I have a bottom shelf I'd like to put him on, I know there is enough height, but I'm curious if at angle you'd be able to fit the base with the tail inside that dimension.

I know it may not fully fit in, but if it can at least not have the base sticking over it would work.

I don't think so galactiboy. I couldn't measure super accurately but on the base she is 18" tall and nose to tail about the same.

Not sure if it helps but my display shelf is 27" tall and 34" wide

Thanks maker, you should definitely get on the hunt for a snowie or two. I still need to get the Probe higher up to make room for the E-Web cannon.

Just a few shots of my Tauntaun on Hoth.
My side yard with over 6 feet of snow and ice.
My neighbors were looking at me like I was insane...LOL
