Kind of primitive thinking to believe that environmental factors such as books people read, movies they watch, video games or other activities people invest a lot of time in have nothing to do with their actions. I guess this guy was predestined to do what he did regardless of his interests or lifestyle or anything.

I don't believe the connection, but it is what I have seen several news agencies report.

Yeah and ABC reported he was a member of the Tea Party and he wasn't. Yet the guy with the same name and is a member of the Tea Party suddenly got a ton of death threats. Gotta love the liberal media and their lack of fact checking these days.

Sorry......it's not just liberal media. Even Fox has taken back some of what they reported. They even talked about how the media.....in general......doesn't do enough fact checking because they want to get the story first. Someone first reported he was an Occupy member. I can just about guess where that came from.

isn't it kind of primitive thinking to jump to the conclusion that people who don't think video games, comics, movies, etc had anything to do with why this guy shot up a theater are assuming he was predestined to do anything?

You can't "blame" movies, music and TV, but to act like the crap they program you with constantly doesn't have any influence on peoples thoughts and actions isn't accurate.

I haven't seen one report saying he belonged to the occupy movement, but I would believe that a lot sooner then any of the other conspiracy theory crap I have seen people say here.

I would think a sane person should be able to tell that those are just books, movies, and video games though.

When someone is inspired to go on a killing spree because of a book he read, or a movie he watched..I think there's a much bigger problem with him.

Not when the people who are blindly defending any external forces that someone ever experienced in their life.

Has anyone here provided any reasonable hypothesis that covers a middle ground?

Everyone here defending media is basically saying "there's no correlation whatsoever." Thats a cop out.

So are you saying we should ban all books, movies, video games, sports, music? This guy was an honors student in neuroscience. Working towards a PhD. Volunteering at youth camps...no history of violence in his past. We don't even know if he played video games and if he did, what type of game did he play...so I think it's a bit unfair to blame this on things like that.

I'm still putting my money on him having some kind of mental illness.

I take that back, I just googled it and found a few "sources" one of which has to be false because it claims he was arrested as part of the Occupy Movement in San Diego, yet police claim he had no record when he purchased the guns.

They reported this morning that it wasn't true. When this first happened, people were throwing things out left and right, then taking them back later.

Figures. :lol

I seriously need fracking cable. Been without for almost a month. All Internet has been from my phone. Haha

So...what's the solution? People with much bigger problems are all around. I'm not suggesting by any stretch to ban movies or video games...but as a society we need to accept that environmental factors DO lead to actions, by crazy people and normal people. To deny that people are influenced by art and culture is very closed minded and defensive, IMO.

I'm a fan of a video games and film, but I also understand how it does affect our consciousness.

I dare you to try watching Deadwood for 20 hours straight and come out of it without cursing. :lol

its a cop out to blame anyone but the sick freak who pulled the trigger. He wasn't exposed to anything more then just about everyone else in the world has been. Unless he was secretly altered by the Treadstone project there is just no justification to blame this on video games, etc. It saddens me that people look so hard to blame the environment to try to explain away this guys horrible deeds.

Not at all, what I'm saying is until we accept that our cultural attitudes, art, entertainment, etc actually formulate part of our personality, we're doomed to continue to breed monsters.

We don't get rid of it, but we need to learn to manage it somehow, or continue to see the results.

Well I have. Several times. And somewhere in this thread it's mentioned that it was reported too.

I'm too lazy to look for it though. :lol

And of course you'd believe that, but you'd never believe he was a *********, right?

I don't believe either one and never did. :1-1:

So you are saying that by "nature" he was destined to be a killer? Environment didn't play in it at all?

Maybe a middle ground?

If someone has difficulty separating fantasy (video games, movies, etc) from reality, then yes I will say there is an underlying problem with them that has nothing to do with these forms of entertainment. I've yet to read a study that convinced me otherwise...and yes there are some out there that say there is a correlation to violence and games as well as violence and the media but there are also just as many that disprove that theory.

But I don't think anyone is blindly saying that a person isn't influenced by external forces. External forces that are in fact a reality for that person...such as being in an abusive home, growing up in a poverty stricken, crime filled neighborhood, getting little or no education and having to resort to crime for money, peer pressure to join a gang, etc...Those are all external forces that yes - do affect a person. But from what I have read - this killer does not fall into any of those categories.

They claim that people can do things like this without any mental illness, but I'm betting he's a mental case.

Though in this case, I hope he was totally sane so he doesn't just end up in a psycho ward. If he does go to prison, he won't need an ad on adult friend finder anymore.
